The working title for the “Spark of Rebellion” episodes were “Ezra, Part One” and “Ezra, Part Two.”
-
Both Commandant Aresko and Taskmaster Grint are voiced by actor David Shaughnessy. In scenes where they interact, Shaughnessy is essentially talking to himself.
-
In the first draft of the script, Ezra is chased off by Imperials after faking the code red emergency, and steals a speeder bike. Returning to his tower roost, Ezra opens a stolen crate only to discover it full of electronic leaflets of Imperial propaganda. His run-in with Kanan would happen the next day.
-
When Aresko and Grint meet with Supplymaster Lyste to discuss the code red emergency, they are standing in front of an immense Sienar Fleet Systems mural that was first revealed at www.sienarfleetsystems.com.
-
The high pitched tone, like a sound of mysterious wind, was created to suggest a more benevolent presence in the Force, for when Ezra first senses Kanan’s presence. This was to contrast the previous sound effect that represented the Force -- a deep rumble -- which had mostly been used to portray the dark side.
-
During the animatic of this episode, the extensive speeder bike chase out of Capital City was added to inject the first act with Star Wars action. The first draft screenplay instead featured a foot chase across rooftops.
-
The crew uses “Spectre” code names when operating in public to avoid their identities being discovered by the Empire.
-
The planet Kessel is first mentioned in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, but this is its first on-screen appearance. Star Wars Rebels uses designs and notes that George Lucas extensively developed for Kessel, describing its appearance, culture, and economy.
-
As indicated by his amazement at being in the Ghost’s gunport, Ezra has never been off-planet.
-
“Tarkintown” is not a formal name for the settlement, but rather a derisive nickname coined by settlers. It finds its real-world parallels in the hoovervilles of the 1930s, shanty towns in the US during the Great Depression named after President Herbert Hoover.
-
The crates the Ghost crew steals from Lyste are color-coded. The red crates have foodstuffs. The gray crates have blaster rifles.
-
Hera refers to her Wookiee cargo as an oversized “monong.” The first draft script called it an ape. It was Star Wars-ified to “momong,” a Trandoshan monkey, before evolving into “monong,” a new creature.
-
The hazard label on the door aboard the Imperial transport supposedly holding Wookiee prisoners is based on a similar label designed to indicate captive wampa ice creatures within Echo Base on Hoth.
-
The helmet Ezra grabs aboard the Star Destroyer is an Imperial stormtrooper cadet helmet.
-
Zeb’s go-to Lasat exclamation in moments of crisis is “Karabast!” He’ll use this extensively throughout the series.
-
The stormtrooper that Ezra zaps with his slingshot and then falls down into the mining pit emits the famous “Wilhelm scream,” an audio Easter egg that has appeared in hundreds of movies, TV shows, and video games.
-
The Wookiee gunship design seen at the end of the episode was newly created for Star Wars Rebels extrapolated from the military vehicles seen during the Battle of Kashyyyk in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.
-
In the script, Sabine would have more fully translated for the grateful Wookiees: “Wullffwarro expresses gratitude on behalf of his people, especially to the great Jedi Knight… and his Padawan disciple.”
