In the Senate, a bill to deregulate the Banking Clan in order to finance the war is being debated. Padmé Amidala and Bail Organa are among those against deregulation, while representatives of the Trade Federation, Techno Union, and Banking Clan are among those for it. While Padmé argues that negotiation with the Separatists should be considered, a decision will be tabled until a consensus can be reached.
-
Leaving the Senate chambers, Senators Lot Dodd, Gume Saam, and Nix Card discuss their frustration with Senator Amidala. They predict the deregulation bill will not pass unless the war hits a little closer to home. They conspire to bring a Separatist attack to Coruscant.
-
Padmé speaks to Anakin in a hallway outside the Senate chambers. She wants the Jedi Council to speak to Palpatine about reaching a diplomatic solution to the war. Anakin feels it is not the Jedi's role to make such arguments. Ahsoka questions this thinking, confused by the politics of the Senate. Padmé resolves to teach Anakin's apprentice something of her world in politics.
-
Aboard his flagship, General Grievous communicates with a hologram of Count Dooku. Dooku informs the Separatist warlord that his representatives in the Republic are counting on Grievous to succeed in his mission. Grievous assures the Sith Lord that his troops will not fail.
-
Padmé confides to Ahsoka that she wishes to speak to her old friend Senator Bonteri, a Separatist, who served with Padmé in the Senate before the war. Ahsoka agrees to help, and Padmé forms a plan: Padmé will use Ahsoka's status as a Jedi -- and her special clearance -- to go behind enemy lines and meet with Bonteri. They prepare to leave for Raxus.
-
Padmé and Ahsoka, both shrouded in cloaks, arrive on Raxus and meet Senator Mina Bonteri on the landing platform. After Padmé introduces Ahsoka, they take a transport to Bonteri's palatial home. Upon their arrival, Bonteri asks her son Lux to help carry her guests' luggage. Ahsoka refuses his help, uncertain what to make of the young Separatist.
-
From inside the palace, Padmé observes how much Lux has grown. Bonteri suggests that even the war can't stop time. When Ahsoka accuses the Separatists of creating the war, Bonteri points out that many Separatists view the Republic and Jedi in the same light. Lux's father felt that way before he died a year earlier at the hand of Republic clones. Ahsoka excuses herself.
-
On Coruscant, General Grievous' team of demolition droids, disguised as utilitarian sweeper droids, have arrived on Coruscant. The clones that receive them on the landing platform order them to get right to work.
-
Ahsoka passes Lux on the steps of the palace. Spying her lightsaber, he asks if she's a Jedi. Before the war, he'd understood the Jedi to be good. Now, he's not so sure. Ahsoka confesses she's never met a non-military Separatist. Each seems to find in the other someone they hadn't expected.
-
Inside, Padmé and Bonteri discuss the need to end the war. Padmé describes the current state of the Republic Senate, which Bonteri confesses is similar to her own. Bonteri agrees to send out a Senate motion to open peace negotiations with the Republic.
-
In the Separatist Senate, Bonteri motions to open peace negotiations with Palpatine on Coruscant. A holographic Dooku officiates. A vote is taken and won -- peace negotiations will be extended to the Republic.
-
Dooku updates the three Separatist conspirators on Coruscant via hologram. They do not like this turn of events, as the war is required to generate profits for the Trade Federation, Techno Union and Banking Clan. Dooku assures them that the impending Coruscant attack will snuff any chances of a peace agreement.
-
Padmé and Ahsoka leave Bonteri, who is cautiously optimistic for peace. Ahsoka and Lux say their good-byes.
-
Padmé brings the Separatist peace proposal to Palpatine. She argues that an end to the fighting would spare them the need to borrow money from the Banking Clan. Palpatine questions the Separatists' sincerity. Padmé confesses she's been in direct contact with them -- an action which clearly unsettles Palpatine. Nonetheless, he agrees to put a vote to the floor.
-
Thousands of levels below the city surface, the sweeper droids arrive at a control room for the generator that powers the city. The droids convert into demolition droids. They open fire on the workers there, finishing them off. Combining into pairs at various locations around the room, the droids become time bombs.
-
Padmé addresses the Senate. She argues that because the Separatists are open to peace negotiations, the need to further fund the war seems ill-timed. Senator Organa agrees that there is no need to deregulate the banks. The Rodian Senator Onaconda Farr moves to vote the deregulation bill down.
-
The droids explode and the power generator collapses. The city goes dark and an explosion rocks the Senate Building. Twi'lek Senator Orn Free Taa screams that they're under attack as several fires burn throughout the city. The Senate, under emergency lighting, discovers that this was a Separatist attack. The movement to deregulate is again brought to the floor.
-
Padmé and Ahsoka meet up with Anakin in the Senate hallway. Aware that the two secretly went to see Bonteri, he scolds them both -- it was dangerous and illegal. While peace remains elusive, Ahsoka has arrived at a deeper understanding of the politics of war -- they are not as black and white as she once thought. Padmé's disappointment seems to lift slightly with this small victory.
