On a mission to rendezvous with Poe Dameron to deliver information vital to the Resistance, Kaz and the other New Republic pilots come under attack by the First Order.
-
In a bold move, Kaz swings his ship around to provide cover for his friends to escape, firing on the red TIE interceptor and taking heavy damages in the fray.
-
Poe Dameron appears just in time to join the fight and together they successfully drive off the crimson craft.
-
Aboard a Resistance blockade runner, Poe encourages Kaz to join him and fight with the Resistance.
-
While prowling around the ship, Kaz stumbles into a secret meeting between General Leia Organa and Poe. The intel Kaz provided has confirmed their worst fears: the First Order is planning a full-scale attack on the New Republic!
-
Inspired to help the cause and tasked with a secret mission, Kaz's first step is a disappointing transmission to his father, a New Republic senator, who accuses Kaz of always needing his help to get out of trouble. This mission is something Kaz will have to do on his own.
-
Soon, Kaz is on his way to the Colossus, a fueling platform located on the Outer Rim planet of Castilon. The plan is for him to blend in and find out who's been helping the First Order build up raw materials to launch its attack...
-
But from the beginning he struggles with his role as an undercover agent. When the very literal Neeku overhears Kaz declaring his dream of being "the best starfighter pilot in the galaxy," Kaz instead finds himself the subject of some notoriety among the platform denizens.
-
By the time Poe and Kaz reach Aunt Z's tavern, Kaz's reputation has preceded him.
-
Kaz meets Jarek Yeager, a quiet and hardworking businessman who runs a repair shop on the platform, and the man Poe hopes will agree to hire Kaz on as a mechanic as part of his cover.
-
While Poe and Jarek retire to discuss the arrangement, Poe leaves BB-8 to look after Kaz (and his big mouth).
-
However, a friendly game of holo-darts soon leaves Kaz in debt to one of the locals, Grevel, who ensures his own victory by cheating, and at the center of a brawl with the hulking Bolza Grool.
-
After Yeager and Poe arrive to break up the fight, Kaz tries to explain that the trouble started with Neeku's misunderstanding, an admission that leaves Neeku walking away dejected.
-
As he tries to apologize to his new friend, Neeku gets what he thinks is a brilliant idea: If Kaz challenges the Ace Pilots in a platform race and wins, his boast about being the best wouldn't have been a lie after all!
-
To race, Kaz will need a ship. Yeager agrees to loan him the Fireball, introducing Kaz to the rest of the crew that works to keep the rickety ship in the air. The team includes a battered old astromech nicknamed Bucket and Tam Ryvora, a skilled mechanic who has dreams of flying, as well.
-
As they work to upgrade the ship, Kaz meets Torra Doza, his bubbly opponent in the next day's race.
-
Kaz and Neeku head over to Acquisitions to get parts for the ship from Flix and Orka and yet again Kaz finds himself deeper in debt. He simply can't pay.
-
One problem leads to another. In exchange for the parts, Kaz has to get a gorg from Bolza Grool, securing the deal by promising to put his logo on his racer.
-
The big race day arrives and Kaz manages to stay competitive with Torra's racer until he pushes his ship too hard and goes down in flames. Fortunately, he survives the crash and earns his place on the platform in Yeager's garage.
-
Elsewhere, danger looms. Deep in the Unknown Regions, the First Order has constructed a new superweapon, Starkiller Base, which harvests the energy from surrounding stars to harness its destructive power.
