During early development, this episode was titled “Darklighter” and dealt with the defection of Biggs Darklighter into the rebel ranks, but timeline complications with Biggs’ established A New Hope backstory meant that Wedge was the better candidate.

The horned icon on Vult Skerris’ helmet can be found on the side of the original scout walker effects model built for The Empire Strikes Back (though it is absent from the ones seen in Return of the Jedi). It is featured quite prominently on the original Kenner toy of the scout walker.

Ezra’s mention of infiltrating an Imperial Academy is a reference to the first season episode, “Breaking Ranks.” In “The Antilles Extraction,” Ezra is playing a role very similar to what Kanan did in Season One – that is, worrying about the infiltrator.
-
Wedge Antilles and Derek “Hobbie” Klivian are pilots seen in the original trilogy of Star Wars films. Sabine never learns Hobbie’s full name in the episode, hence the slight pause when she introduces him to Commander Sato.
-
Over a year before this episode aired, the idea that Wedge had some connection to Fulcrum was mentioned in the Star Wars novel, Aftermath (released in September, 2015). Readers at the time understandably presumed it to be a reference to Ahsoka Tano, but this episode sheds more light on the nature of the Fulcrum alias.

This episode was written by screenwriter Gary Whitta, who joined the Rebels Season 3 writing team after his work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Sabine’s alias (Ria Talla) in the Academy is a leftover name from an early version of Rogue One.
-
The rigged charges that separate the solar collectors from the escaping TIE fighters are a nod to the old Kenner toy functionality – kids could pop off the wings of the original TIE with the push of a button to simulate “battle damage.”
-
In the outline stage, the unnamed Academy instructor was going to be Baron Valen Rudor first seen in Season One.
-
This episode marks the series debut of the TIE interceptor. Red markings denoting it as an elite craft is a nod to similar striping seen in Star Wars Legends material, like the fighter used by Baron Soontir Fel, a character from the comics and novels.
-
This episode marks the series debut of the classic Rebel transport design first seen in The Empire Strikes Back. In the making of the original movie, ILM modelmakers affectionately referred to the transports as the big “tuna ships.” The interior cockpit of the ship in Rebels is a repurposing and modification of the star bus interior set.
