After Ezra's dangerous connection with the dark side, Kanan prepares a new challenge for him, meant to determine if the boy will continue on the Jedi path. Kanan instructs Ezra to prep the Phantom.
-
While Kanan is unsure that this test will work, Hera implores him to help Ezra.
-
On the Phantom, Kanan explains that there are Jedi Temples spread throughout the stars. While the Empire destroyed most of these outposts, some remain. It's up to Ezra to reach out through the Force and locate a Temple.
-
After a few moments of deep concentration, Ezra sees a massive stone with a tunnel and bright star inside of it -- and it's on Lothal. He doesn't know the coordinates, but he can direct Kanan to the structure.
-
The Jedi arrive, and Kanan reveals that he already knew of the Temple's existence; he checked a starmap on his holocron earlier in the day. Still, he wasn't sure this was where Ezra was meant to be. Kanan then orders his Padawan to figure out a way inside, but warns that the Empire has access to old Jedi records, and may be watching.
-
Inspecting the construct, Ezra finds nothing. But at Kanan's instruction, he reaches out through the Force to connect with the Temple. Ezra discovers that it wants to admit Master and Padawan, together.
-
And so it is. Kanan and Ezra reach out as one, and the massive mountain moves to reveal a door. "Don't lose focus," Kanan says. "I don't want this thing crashing down on us."
-
They enter together, but the Padawan loses focus...
-
...at the sight of dead Jedi sitting on the floor. The door closes behind them. Kanan explains that in this Temple, Ezra will face his fear -- alone. Kanan will wait in the entrance, with the Masters who died waiting for their students...who never returned.
-
As Ezra heads further inside, he asks Kanan what he should be looking for. "Nothing and everything," Kanan replies. "That doesn't help," Ezra says. Kanan know -- but that's what his Master told him.
-
After he walks through some dark caverns, Ezra comes upon three doors. He uses a game-like rhyme to choose a path, only to be interrupted by Kanan. His Master decided to join him, after all, and tells Ezra to follow. The Padawan has a hard time keeping up, however, and loses track of Kanan...until he hears a scream.
-
Turning a corner, Ezra finds the Inquisitor standing over an injured Kanan. As the Jedi hunter walks forward to destroy Ezra, Kanan attacks, hoping to save his apprentice.
-
But the Inquisitor is too powerful. He stabs Kanan through, then kicks the Jedi off the rocky ledge and into the abyss below.
-
"I'll make you pay," Ezra says. He draws Kanan's lightsaber to his hand, but can't ignite it, and accidentally disassembles the Jedi weapon.
-
The Inquisitor stalks forward, and Ezra stumbles backwards and off the cliff. He falls helplessly, powerless.
-
Finally, Ezra hits bottom, but finds himself aboard the Ghost. He overhears the crew in the middle of a conversation, expressing their doubt and dislike for him. He's stung by their words.
-
At last, Zeb spots the Padawan. "Well, look who's here...nothing personal, kid," he says. Ezra realizes, however, that this doesn't make sense -- he's in the Temple, not on the Ghost. But just as Ezra looks away, he hears the sound of a lightsaber. The boy backs away into another room, frightened, as his friends scream for help.
-
The door opens, and the Inquisitor steps forward. His friends are dead. Ezra runs, and the Inquisitor again stalks forward until the Padawan is pinned to a door.
-
When the door opens, Ezra again falls into a nothingness. He lands back in the Temple, where he comes to his senses. Ezra realizes that he can survive alone if need be, and that if Kanan is still alive, he can help his Master.
-
But once again, the Inquisitor appears in his path. Ezra backs away, saying he knows the Inquisitor was on the Ghost, and all that transpired was an illusion. "It may have been," the Inquisitor says. "But I assure you, I am not." The dark side warrior then grabs Ezra by his face, proving he's real.
-
The Inquisitor taunts Ezra, but the boy comes to grips with his fear. He is afraid to let down his friends and his Master, but not to die. Ezra stands his ground. The Inquisitor angrily raises his lightsaber, but his strike passes through the Padawan.
-
Ezra opens his eyes and finds himself alive. But he is not alone. A disembodied voice speaks to him. "Big fears have you faced, young one." The voice asks Ezra to follow, and claims only to be "a guide."
-
Balls of light appear before Ezra, leading him through a Temple door.
-
Meanwhile, Kanan has grown worried about his student. He stands in a panic, but the mysterious voice calms him. "Patience. Remember you nothing of your own training?" Kanan knows the voice: Master Yoda. He is shocked, but comforted. They talk about Kanan's doubt in himself as a Master.
-
Yoda continues to lead Ezra through the Temple. "Your path, you must decide," he tells Ezra. With that, he walks through the center door.
-
Yoda tells Kanan that this is a dangerous time for both Kanan and his apprentice. Kanan promises the won't let Ezra lose his way -- not like he did.
-
Ezra makes his way into a large, round room. "Why must you become Jedi?" Yoda asks. Ezra's answers lead him down a path of anger, and he claims he'll make the Empire suffer with his new power. "Jedi way is revenge? Teach you this, your Master did?" Yoda says. The ancient Jedi senses much anger and fear in the boy, but finally breaks through to him. Ezra acknowledges that his new friends are selfless, and they make people feel alive through their kindness.
-
"Good. Good," Yoda says. "Ahead of you, a difficult path there is, Padawan. A Jedi, you may yet be." Suddenly, a shimmering blue light descends into Ezra's hands.
-
It's a crystal of some sort, and Ezra admires its beauty. He reunites with Kanan, who's surprised and proud; it's a kyber crystal, the heart of a lightsaber.
-
Back on the Ghost, Ezra emerges from his quarters. Using the kyber crystal and parts donated by his friends, he has built his first lightsaber -- and taken a large step in his Jedi journey.
