During the Clone Wars, the Jedi Council suspected the InterGalactic Banking Clan of a secret alliance with the Separatists. Because of Padmé Amidala’s past involvement with Banking Clan Senator Rush Clovis, the Council asked her to spy on her old flame. To the dismay of a jealous Anakin Skywalker, Padmé reluctantly agreed.
-
Clovis was eager to rekindle his romance with Padmé, and suggested she accompany him to Cato Neimoidia to collect credits owed to the Banking Clan by the Trade Federation. Padmé’s arrival – with a disguised Anakin posing as her pilot -- came as a surprise to Senator Lott Dod, but Dod greeted her graciously enough.
-
Parting with Padmé, Clovis turned to the real reason for his visit – negotiating a Banking Clan investment in a new Separatist droid foundry. The negotiations with Dod were tough, and the nettled Neimoidian decided he could get better terms from Clovis by threatening Padmé. He slipped poison into the Naboo Senator’s drink.
-
The poison left Padmé woozy, but she continued her mission, asking for a tour of the palace. While in the library, she asked Clovis to get her some water, then moved quickly to download the plans for the foundry onto a hologram disc. Signaled by his wife, Anakin entered the library to find Padmé in Clovis’s arms – but that was a ruse to let her pass the disc to the Jedi.
-
Clovis discovered Padmé’s treachery, but when she began to succumb to the poison, he realized what Dod had done and helped Anakin take her to the ship. Dod intercepted them, and Clovis pulled a blaster on the Trade Federation Senator, demanding the antidote.
-
Clovis asked Anakin to return the disc, but the Jedi coldly refused, taking off with Padmé and leaving the Banking Clan representative to face the wrath of his Separatist allies.
-
Clovis’s high rank in the Banking Clan saved his life; later in the war, Padmé traveled to Scipio to secure a Republic loan amid worries in the Senate about the organization’s stability. The Banking Clan said Clovis would handle the matter, but Padmé dismissed her old flame as a known Separatist and stormed off.
-
That night, Clovis sneaked into Padmé’s guest quarters, claiming that he had discovered corruption within the Banking Clan and needed her help to prove it. An apparent assassination attempt convinced Padmé of Clovis’s sincerity, and she agreed to help. The next day, she told the Banking Clan she’d accept Clovis as its representative, but only if she herself were allowed into the group’s vaults.
-
With Clovis’s help, Padmé downloaded data proving what Clovis had said – that the vaults were empty. She was arrested for espionage, but slipped the data disc to Clovis before being led away.
-
Anakin bailed Padmé out of jail and they found Clovis at his palatial chalet, which had been sacked. Anakin saved them from another assassination attempt by the bounty hunter Embo, and they fled in a hover-sledge, then departed Scipio for Coruscant with the files Padmé had stolen.
-
On Coruscant, Clovis faced Senators and Jedi suspicious of his past conduct, and convinced them that he wanted to return the Banking Clan to what it had once been – a fair system for commerce and trade. Palpatine assigned Padmé to work with Clovis on investigating the organization’s secret accounts.
-
Working together, Padmé and Clovis discovered the Separatists had been allowed to miss payments on their loans while the Republic paid a premium. Overcome by his emotions, Clovis tried to force a kiss on Padmé. She’d just pushed him away when Anakin arrived.
-
Enraged, the young Jedi fought with Clovis. Unable to stop the fight, Padmé summoned her security team. When asked what happened, Clovis said an attacker entered the apartment, but was repelled with Anakin’s help.
-
While recovering in Padmé’s bedroom, Clovis received a holographic message from Count Dooku. When Clovis told Dooku he was close to revealing collusion between the Banking Clan and the Separatists, Dooku had an intriguing counteroffer for him. He would give Clovis the location of the Banking Clan’s secret accounts, allowing the former Senator to prove his case and take over the organization.
-
In a shocking turn of events, the Banking Clan told Supreme Chancellor Palpatine that its leadership had been arrested. Both the Separatists and Palpatine endorsed Clovis as the group’s new leader. Speaking to the Senate, Clovis promised to restore order and return the banks to their formal neutrality.
-
Clovis returned to Scipio to assume his new duties. But once in his office tower, Clovis was contacted by Dooku, who demanded the banks’ allegiance and threatened not to pay the interest on the Banking Clan’s loans if Clovis refused.
-
Pressured by Dooku, Clovis immediately raised the interest rates on the Republic’s loans but not on the Separatists’. Despite Clovis’s declarations of neutrality, Dooku then sent a Separatist task force to Scipio to attack the Republic forces there, making the Banking Clan look like a Separatist ally.
-
Padmé found herself trapped on war-torn Scipio, and commando droids dragged her to Clovis’s office towering. As Padmé watched in dismay, Dooku declared the Separatists in control of the banks and thanked a despondent Clovis for the role he played.
-
Dooku departed as a Republic invasion began. Anakin fought his way to Clovis’s office tower, cutting down the battle droids standing guard. Clovis, realizing he’d been outmaneuvered by Dooku, panicked and took Padmé hostage while trying to explain that the Separatist leader had masterminded the plot.
-
Just then a vulture droid smashed into the tower, leaving the structure dangerously unstable. Anakin grabbed both Padmé and Clovis before they could fall, but wasn’t strong enough to hold both of them. Clovis apologized to Padmé and let go, falling to his death. In the aftermath, Palpatine took over the Banking Clan in the interests of galactic stability.
