Mon Mothma represented Chandrila in the Galactic Senate during the final years of the Republic, speaking out against the militarization of the Republic alongside allies such as Alderaan’s Bail Organa and Naboo’s Padmé Amidala.

Mothma feared that the Republic’s determination to defeat the Separatists militarily was blinding it to the cost of the war, and warned about the effects of wartime measures, from deregulation of the banks to Palpatine’s growing array of emergency powers.

Along with her friend Bail Organa, Mothma served as a mentor to Padmé, encouraging the young Senator as she became a leading advocate of seeking a peaceful solution to the Clone Wars.

Mothma supported efforts to cut military spending – a stand that was derided as unpatriotic by militarists in the Senate.

Mothma joined Loyalist allies such as Rodia’s Onaconda Farr in toasting Padmé Amidala’s speech declaring that more military production would not end the war but merely escalate it while bankrupting the Republic. But the celebration ended in horror as Farr collapsed, killed by poison in his wine.

When Padmé insisted on conducting her own investigation into Farr’s death, Mothma reluctantly agreed to her plan – but suggested that Bail accompany her for safety’s sake.

Mothma comforted Representative Lolo Purs after the Rodian claimed Kaminoan Senator Halle Burtoni attacked her. The Chandrilan Senator didn’t suspect her claim was false – in fact, Purs had murdered Farr and framed Burtoni for the crime.

The Loyalists’ efforts to curb military production failed, but their efforts to pursue peace continued, with Mothma joining Organa and Padmé for a peace conference with Separatist Senators on Mandalore.

The peace efforts went nowhere, and in the final days of the Clone Wars, Palpatine appointed governors to oversee the Republic’s star systems, increasing his own power at the expense of the Senate’s. Alarmed, Mothma and Organa began preparing in secret for possible resistance to Palpatine.

After Palpatine declared himself Emperor, Mothma continued to speak for the galaxy’s people in the Senate while secretly working with Organa to create a Rebellion dedicated to overthrowing his rule. After the Senate was dissolved and Alderaan destroyed, Mothma became the Alliance’s political leader, briefing its commanders before the climactic Battle of Endor.
