To steal coaxium from the Empire on Vandor, the Beckett gang first needed to steal an AT-hauler with the lifting power to carry away a conveyex’s cargo container. The chaotic fighting on Mimban offered ideal cover, so Val, Tobias Beckett and Rio Durant disguised themselves as Imperials to case the Empire’s operations.
-
A young mudtrooper, Han Solo, figured out that Val and her companions were impostors trying to steal equipment. Han didn’t care – in fact, he wanted in on whatever they were planning. But with their cover blown, Val told her compatriots that they now had to kill Han. Instead, Beckett turned the mudtrooper over to the Imperials as a deserter.
-
Despite Val’s objections, Beckett changed his mind about Han when he saw the kid running for his life, shackled to a Wookiee prisoner. The gang headed for Vandor with their stolen AT-hauler. The plan was for Beckett, Han and Chewie to detach the car with the coaxium, Val to blow a key bridge, and Rio to carry the car to safety as the conveyex plunged into the abyss.
-
Val suspected Han was waiting for a girl and asked where she was. The young Corellian said she was gone, but he’d made her a promise and planned to buy his own ship with the credits he earned from the heist. Older and wiser, Val advised Han to make room for someone else. Meanwhile, Beckett swore to her that after the heist they’d go back to his homeworld and he’d learn to play the valachord. It sounded good, but Val had heard it before.
-
At dawn the gang swung into action. Val free-climbed the bridge and wired it to blow – a difficult task that required all her skill as a demolitions expert and saboteur.
-
That was hard enough, but there were complications. Enfys Nest’s Cloud-Riders swooped down on the conveyex track, after the same prize as Beckett’s gang. That brought Imperial Viper probes to the scene. Watching them approach, Val realized she had nowhere to hide.
