The thief and slicer known as DJ lived in Canto Bight, making a thoroughly dishonest living stealing from well-heeled gamblers passing through the resort city. DJ – a nickname derived from his philosophy DON’T JOIN – stole from the First Order and the Resistance alike, seeing them as equally corrupt parts of an exploitative money machine.
-
DJ was in Canto Bight’s jail – which he claimed was the only place he could sleep without being pestered by cops – when Finn and Rose Tico were placed in his cell. Overhearing that they needed a codebreaker who could penetrate the First Order’s security, he offered his services. When Rose and Finn declined, DJ shrugged, effortlessly picked the lock of the cell and went on his way.
-
To his surprise, DJ discovered BB-8 had disarmed several guards and trussed them up. Impressed, DJ decided he might profit by helping Rose and Finn, and enlisted the astromech’s help stealing a ship.
-
DJ and BB-8 stole a sleek space yacht, the Libertine, and arrived in time to prevent Rose and Finn from being recaptured by the Canto Bight police. With no choice, Rose reluctantly agreed to hire the mangy thief to get them through the First Order’s flagship, which DJ called “Snoke’s boudoir.”
-
DJ made no secret of his mercenary intent, demanding Rose’s Otomok medallion – made of valuable Haysian smelt – as a deposit. When Finn objected, DJ showed the former stormtrooper that the Libertine’s owner was an arms dealer supplying both sides of the new galactic war – a perfect illustration of why DJ’s creed would always be DON’T JOIN.
-
DJ bypassed the First Order’s security, allowing him, Finn and Rose to infiltrate the Supremacy. Disguised in First Order uniforms, they made their way through the ship’s corridors, determined to shut down the hyperspace tracker.
-
DJ used Rose’s medallion to bypass the security controls – Haysian smelt, he explained, was an ideal conductor. He then flipped the medallion back to a startled Rose. Moments later, the group was captured by stormtroopers. Their mission had failed.
-
DJ saw a chance to cut a deal, earning his freedom and a payday. His bargaining chip: he’d overhead Poe Dameron telling Finn and Rose that the Resistance planned to evacuate aboard small, hard-to-detect transports. Finn accused him of being a murderer, but DJ coolly told him his betrayal was just business: “they blow you up today, you blow them up tomorrow.”
