As Director of Advanced Weapons Research and part of the Imperial Security Bureau, Orson Krennic’s life and death were dominated by his obsession with the Death Star. Shortly after the formation of the Galactic Empire, Krennic attended a summit on Eriadu hosted by Governor Tarkin to update a group of high ranking Imperial officers about the status of the construction of the Death Star – also known as Project Stardust.

When Krennic’s old friend and scientist Galen Erso fled Coruscant, wanting nothing to do with developing a superweapon for the Empire, Krennic and a group of death troopers tracked Erso and his family to the remote plant Lah’mu, where Krennic forced Galen’s return and ordered the death of Galen’s wife Lyra.

After numerous scientific setbacks delayed the Death Star project, Krennic was pressured to focus on sourcing new materials for the superweapon. At the Maltheen Divide, Krennic hosted a secret meeting for a plan to acquire a valuable form of kalkite found on Ghorman, a mineral needed to coat the reactor lenses of the Death Star to stabilize its energy output. Ghorman’s population would need to be controlled as the gouge mining on the planet needed to extract the kalkite could destabilize the planet’s core. Krennic assigned Dedra Meero the task of suppressing the Ghor after considering her suggestion to incite a local radical insurgency to aid the Imperial Ministry of Enlightenment’s already active anti-Ghor whispering campaign.

While Krennic was not present for the Ghorman Massacre, he was directly responsible for it. Krennic later questioned Meero after learning she had questionably come into contact with some of the Death Star files that described both the superweapon’s capabilities and Galen Erso’s involvement with its development.

Desperate to prove that the Death Star project was on the verge of greatness, Krennic tested the weapon on Jedha City. Grand Moff Tarkin, impressed by the demonstration, threatened to take control of the project. While Krennic seethed at Tarkin’s power grab, he learned that an Imperial pilot now in contact with the rebels defected from Eadu, where Galen Erso was stationed.

On Eadu, Krennic confronted Galen and forced him to confess his betrayal. But before Krennic could further punish Galen for his actions, Eadu was attacked by rebel forces. Krennic escaped, but was later summoned to Darth Vader’s fortress on Mustafar, where the Dark Lord encouraged him to ensure the Emperor’s new weapon had not been compromised.

While Krennic was on Scarif to investigate Galen Erso’s recent communications, rebels attacked the Imperial base. After ordering a counterattack, Krennic found Cassian and Jyn with the Death Star plans in hand. Krennic fired on Cassian but was later shot by him as Krennic confronted Jyn. Unable to stop Jyn from transferring the plans to the rebels, Krennic faced death from the technological terror he helped to create when the Death Star Superlaser targeted Scarif.
