When the Separatists invaded Ryloth, Jedi General Ima-Gun Di and Republic troops joined with Cham Syndulla’s Twi’lek freedom fighters to resist the attack. Syndulla, long suspicious of the Republic and its commitment to Ryloth, doubted that help would arrive for his besieged people.
-
Master Di sacrificed his own life to slow the Separatist advance, and supplies arranged by Bail Organa and Jar Jar Binks arrived in time to keep Syndulla’s resistance fighters from being overrun. But Syndulla knew he was badly outgunned, and his freedom fighters melted away to form a guerrilla movement.
-
After the Republic broke the Separatist blockade of Ryloth, Jedi General Mace Windu sought out Syndulla, hoping to enlist his help in the fight. But Syndulla didn’t trust the Republic, and was still angry over its earlier abandonment of the Twi’leks.
-
Mindful of his people’s suffering, Syndulla agreed to at least speak with Senator Taa. Windu then brokered a deal between the two rivals: The Republic would leave Ryloth after its liberation and Syndulla would refuse to seek political power.
-
Syndulla’s blurrg-mounted fighters joined Windu’s mechanized forces for an assault on the capital city of Lessu. The Twi’leks engaged the city’s battle-droid defenders while Windu sought to capture Wat Tambor, the brutal Separatist emir. Both were successful, and Syndulla demanded Tambor’s surrender. Ryloth was free!
-
After the Empire’s rise, Imperial forces brutally subjugated Ryloth. Syndulla and his freedom fighters returned to their guerrilla ways, and plotted to trap and eliminate Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. Their Free Ryloth movement managed to destroy the Star Destroyer Perilous, but both Palpatine and Vader survived, and Syndulla found that Palpatine had ensnared him rather than the other way around. He was lucky to escape with his life.
-
Cham Syndulla’s dedication to the cause of freedom burned too brightly to be dimmed by any defeat. The Twi’lek revolutionary passed on his skills and determination to his daughter Hera, who would play a key role in kindling the fires of rebellion on the planet Lothal.
