The world of Korba was once rich with kyber — the crystal at the heart of the Jedi lightsaber. Though the kyber had been poisoned by an ancient order of the Sith, Korba's people learned to mine the corrupted crystals for the Jedi, who could restore them to their natural state.
-
Aau, 11, scales a mountainside on Korba gathering creeper-figs. Reaching the top, she stops to admire the view and hums along to a song in the distance.
-
Aau returns home to her father, Abat, who is busy loading kyber crystals into a container. Kratu, a Jedi, has arrived to collect them. Abat sends Aau outside, but she spies on the meeting. As her father handles a red crystal, she begins to sing — causing it to burn her father's hand.
-
Abat goes to see the young girl, and grows curious when Aau seems to have a connection to the kyber. "They call to you," Abat tells Aau. When Kratu departs, Abat scolds his daughter for singing near the crystals. "I just want you to be safe," he says.
-
Father and daughter head into town for a day's work. As she toils in the stables, something calls to Aau from the mountains. She dons a helmet and ventures toward the mines, and nearly falls as she treks along.
-
Inside a cave, Aau sings out. Around her, kyber crystals begin to glow in a rainbow of colors. But the mine becomes unstable, and her father swoops in to pull her out.
-
Still, danger persists as the spire begins to crumble, and Abat and Aau fall from an old bridge! Kratu arrives, stopping their descent with her Jedi abilities.
-
While Kratu continues to shield the father and daughter, a calm comes over Aau. "It's okay, Abi," she says. Aau begins to sing again, purging the kyber crystals of their poison.
-
"Your voice, Aau," Kratu says. "Across the thousands of stars that I have traveled, never have I heard anything like it." The Jedi offers to take the girl with her and train her.
-
The next day, Abat and Aau sit together at the mountain top while Kratu waits. "You're the first of our kind to step out into the stars, Aau. I'm proud of you," Abat says. "I'll miss you, Abi," Aau replies before running to the ship. As the craft departs, clear kyber crystals shine in the Korba sun.
