THX: Amazing Life Trailer
November 28, 2007

Moviegoers with an eye and ear for quality are in for a treat this holiday season: a brand new THX trailer playing in front of movies screening at THX Certified Theaters. Members of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club were given a sneak peek of the trailer last week, but it can now be found in the video player for all visitors to see.

Called Amazing Life, this trailer focuses on strange photo-realistic organisms of various shapes, sizes and colors, growing from a metallic surface. These creatures appear organic in nature, yet foreign to anything on Earth. They spread across the gleaming surface, each one communicating through its own unique sound. These sounds build upon each other, becoming more harmonious, and eventually culminate into the famous THX Deep Note crescendo. A final panning shot reveals the metallic surface to be the THX logo covered by these vibrant, living, musical creatures.

The magic of cinema creates life from lifelessness, transforming something as inert as light passing through celluloid (or, as increasingly popular, illuminated pixels) into living, breathing characters. For that magic to occur in a movie theater demands the best possible picture and sound quality, and THX is the leading authority in the industry.

"THX trailers have wowed movie-going audiences for more than two decades and have become synonymous with great entertainment experiences," said Ed Rice, Director, Global Marketing at THX. "The storyline for Amazing Life provided us a fun and entertaining way to demonstrate the power and performance of a THX Certified Cinema's surround sound and projection system, while at the same time, getting audiences excited for the feature presentation."

For Amazing Life, THX turned to veteran composer, Marco d'Ambrosio, to design the more than 160 sound tracks featuring voices of "Speaker Flowers," "Helicopter Plants" and other unique organisms, with contribution from Joseph Minadeo. The final mix was completed at Lucasfilm's Skywalker Sound under the direction of award-winning re-recording mixer, Gary Rizzo. Hearing this mix at a THX theater should well demonstrate the difference that quality presentation makes.

"At THX, we look at the cinematic environment as a whole," explains Graham McKenna, a THX spokesperson. "We examine everything as a system, from the ground up -- from the architecture, to how thick the walls are, to the viewing angles, to how big and powerful the speakers are, so that a THX Certified Theater can really show off the soundtrack of a movie and this trailer."

The visual effects were led by Eyestorm Productions, a Venice Beach creative production company and visual effects studio founded by former Lucasfilm artists, Kyle Ruddick and Michael Klima. "Creating the THX trailer was the most unique project we have ever been blessed to work on," says Ruddick. "THX gave us an artist's dream creative brief: Create something that is a non-commercial, spectacular piece of art that reaches out to every audience member as a gift, not an advertisement. Its beauty and sound is its message and that alone is THX."

Amazing Life continues a long tradition of spectacular, attention-getting trailers with cutting edge visuals and sound. "We did some research recently to gauge the ongoing effectiveness of THX trailers, and we found that the enthusiasm continues to run high," says Rice. "It doesn't matter if you're 15 or 45 years old -- the older crowd associates THX with Lucasfilm and Star Wars. The younger crowd associates with it being loud, cool and in your face. It heightens the audience anticipation of the movie. One of the greatest testimonials we came across was someone who said, 'When I see the THX trailer, I know it's going to be a cool movie.'"

And it will sound and look great too.
