Tiger Electronics (which would later become a division of Hasbro) first released Giga Pets to animal-challenged fans everywhere in the United States in 1997 and then later in 2006. While the first Giga Pets to hit the market included the Bit Critter, Compu Kitty, Digital Doggie, Baby T-Rex and Micro Chimp, it wasn't long before Lucasfilm got in on the action and made three different Star Wars Giga Friends (as opposed to Giga Pets) -- Yoda, R2-D2, and a rancor that you could teach to "claw, bite and devour its victims."
The lure of the Giga Pet was its easy to care for premise. As a virtual creature you have virtual responsibility and guilt. You could feed it, bathe it, play with it and let it sleep. Or if you were so inclined -- let it die slowly by ignoring it. However, the instructions for the Star Wars Giga Friends were amusing to say the least.
In order for the Rancor Giga Friend to stay happy and growing you had to feed him healthy food (fat guards) and treats (dancing girls). Your rancor would have nightmares if you didn't remember to turn out the light as he slept. Some of the more unseemly chores in owning a rancor include cleaning up his droppings and giving him a daily bath.
