A recent visit to Lucasfilm's Licensing Archives uncovered a great find -- stacks of dusty old photo albums that appeared to be the company's earliest attempts at cataloging the massive amounts of merchandise being produced right after the first film was released in May, 1977. Aside from being floored by the amount of great old merchandise depicted throughout, I couldn't help but be amused by the albums themselves -- for a company that prides itself on being cutting edge, its first licensing database was essentially on par with Grandma's.
In the spirit of Halloween, we thought we'd share a few dozen pages from the albums that contained costumes and masks, presented here just as we found them -- clipped photos, type-written labels, index tabs and all. While this certainly isn't comprehensive -- we couldn't find a bunch of material from The Empire Strikes Back -- it does offer some indication of how Star Wars was merchandised for Halloween and other festivities around the world.
Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we reveal more pages from these fantastic old merchandise scrapbooks found in the Lucasfilm Archives.
