Dark Horse Editor Bob Cooper sought out Gibbons for the series, a decision that writer Macan lauded. "Well, Dave is a great choice because his scope is unlimited -- he can draw crowd scenes, alien cities, weird creatures, space battles and other Star Wars trademark spectacularities as well as he can do quiet, human moments. His Vader possesses just the right mixture of bulky strength and elegant speed, not to mention cruelty and menace. From the moment he was onboard, I was dead certain this was going to be one fine comic."
In addition to the interior illustrations for the four issues, Gibbons also illustrated the four wrap-around covers that link up to form one large panoramic image. Of his work on Vader Quest, he had this to say, "In my comics career, I've been lucky enough to do my versions of many popular icons (Superman, Batman, etc.). and Darth Vader is an equally mythic figure. Plus, his costume is one of the coolest ever!"
