Dave Gibbons: Star Wars Galaxy

A British comic book artist, Dave Gibbons got his start on the weekly sci-fi anthology series, 2000 AD. Also among his early UK weekly work were notable stints on Dan Dare and Doctor Who. In the 1980s, he began work with both Marvel Comics and DC Comics, collaborating with Alan Moore at the latter publisher on Green Lantern and Superman stories. This led to their work together on Watchmen. In the 1990s, Gibbons worked for a variety of publishers, both major and minor, and worked on several Dark Horse Comics titles, including Frank Miller's Martha Washington Goes to War. It was during this era that he contributed to Star Wars.

Gibbons' first Star Wars piece appeared in the second set of Star Wars Galaxy cards from Topps. The popular card series included a subset of cards drawn by leading comic book artists. Gibbons' card (colored by John Cebollero) depicted C-3PO being marched as a prisoner of a group of Jawas. "No doubt he's complaining as usual," Gibbons is quoted as saying on the card-back. "It's great to get a chance to do something connected to Star Wars. I've loved it since I went to a press preview, way back in 1977, and sat open-mouth throughout."
