Draw R2-D2

Ever wanted to draw Star Wars characters and vehicles just like the professional comic book artists? Star Wars illustrator Grant Gould explains with these easy-to-follow steps how to draw R2-D2. Steps 1-5 are drawn lightly with pencil. No pen, no dark lines. Finished lines and details will come at the end.

STEP ONE

Make a slightly tilted line in the center of the main body. This will help you place his "legs" in the next step. Also draw three ovals below him to show where his "feet" will be.

STEP TWO

Drawing lightly with a pencil, create a basic framework using simple shapes.

STEP THREE

Now you can start to give a more solid shape to his "legs" and "feet."

STEP FOUR

Add more details to his lower areas, as well as his dome. Start by drawing his "eye" and the plates around it, and then work your way to the edges, adding in details and lines where needed.

STEP FIVE

The final area left to illustrate is R2-D2's "chest." This can be a tricky section. Use the example as your guide. Be sure to give all of your horizontal lines a slight curve, so that it gives the impression that his droid body is rounded.

STEP SIX

Add a few more details like scuff marks, dents and scratches. Or just keep him looking clean and polished. Once you're satisfied with your masterpiece, you can go over your lines with pen or marker, or heavier pencil lines.
