It was revealed today by Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, that Chewbacca will be featured in the third installment of the bestselling Origami Yoda series, The Secret of the Fortune Wookiee by author Tom Angleberger. Releasing Tuesday, August 7, 2012, with a 1.3-million copy first printing, this is one of the biggest children's book releases of the year. Fans voted through March 28, 2012, to guess which Star Wars character would appear in the next book.
"Though, personally, I was voting for Han Solo, I was glad Tom and fans rallied around his co-pilot, the great Chewbacca," said Susan Van Metre, senior vice president of Amulet Books and Abrams Books for Young Readers. "And actually, Han will play an important role in the story, as Han Foldo. This series has developed such a passionate following, I predict we'll see other beloved Star Wars characters get their chance to become origami."
A major pre-sale and on-sale marketing campaign for this new release in the Origami Yoda series begins in April and continues until the publication day, August 7, 2012. It includes national advertising, online reveals, messages to fans from Angleberger, national publicity, and more.
"The popularity of this series continues to grow by leaps and bounds, and we are thrilled to put more terrific marketing support behind the books to make sure even more kids and fans know about the series," said Michael Jacobs, president and CEO of Abrams.
As Tom Angleberger tours for his April 2012 stand-alone book, the middle-grade political farce Fake Mustache, he will preview scenes from The Secret of the Fortune Wookiee. Major appearances by Angleberger in April include the Texas Library Association, where he will accept the 2012 Texas Bluebonnet Award for The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, and the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. In June, he will be featured with a special surprise guest at BookExpo, and he will be a presenter at the American Library Association's annual conference.
