Drawing Manga-style Princess Leia
March 12, 2008

Celebrating All
Things Japan

This is one in a series of articles celebrating Star Wars from a Japanese perspective (click here for another). It's all because of the recent major announcement that the Star Wars Celebration party is continuing this year in Japan, July 19-21.

Ever wanted to draw Star Wars characters and vehicles just like the professional comic book artists? In this step-by-step series, Star Wars artists and illustrators show you how to draw some of the most beloved characters in the saga.

Graphic storytelling is a respected and centuries-old art form in Japan, and since the end of World War II, comic books -- known in Japan as "Manga" -- have remained the country's dominant medium of entertainment. And over a period of at least the last twenty years, Manga comics have become increasingly popular with international, and especially North American audiences.

Here our own Star Wars illustrator Matt Busch explains with these easy-to-follow steps on how to draw a Manga-style portrait of the feisty Princess Leia. In this example, Leia is drawn in the Moé style of Bishoujo Manga, which includes big eyes, pupils with star-like reflections, a small nose and a flat face.

Step One:
Sketch the basic shapes for the main part of her body. Use guidelines to place her exaggerated facial features.
Step Two:
Accentuate Leia's expression with arched eyebrows and slightly pouting lips. Start to add more shape to her blaster as well.
Step Three:
Leave parts of Leia's hair unshaded to give it a healthy shine! Add a twinkle in her eyes.
