Drawing Animated Salacious Crumb

Ever wanted to draw Star Wars characters and vehicles just like the professional comic book artists? In this step-by-step series, Star Wars artists and illustrators show you how to draw some of the most beloved characters in the saga.

As one of the most annoying critters in the galaxy, the Kowakian monkey-lizard Salacious B. Crumb holds the position as the favored jester in Jabba the Hutt's court. The beak-nosed pot-bellied rascal constantly cackles and pesters anyone within earshot. In Return of the Jedi, when C-3PO temporarily became Jabba's property, Salacious teased the golden protocol droid until R2-D2 eventually put him in his place.

Star Wars illustrator Otis Frampton explains with these easy-to-follow steps on how to draw an animated-style Salacious Crumb.

Steps 1-6 are to be drawn lightly with a pencil. No pen, no dark lines. Finished lines and details will come at the end.

Step One:
Start your drawing of Jabba's little pet with two triangular shapes, one on top of the other. Then draw two curved lines going out from the larger triangle. These shapes and lines create guides for drawing Crumb's head, beak and ears. You should always start your drawings with basic shapes guidelines that you can build upon later with details.
Step Two:
Next draw two curved lines down from the head, starting just to the left of the beak. Now draw two circles touching the top line of the smaller triangle shape. These are his eyes. Then draw a guideline from the top of his head to the tip of his beak, and after that add two curved lines for his brow.
Step Three:
Flesh out the ears and face a bit more. From the tip of each end of the ear line, draw two curved lines toward the head. Then draw two "M"-shape lines to form the shape of his mouth. Finally, draw three curved lines on his neck to show some wrinkles.
Step Four:
Now is the time to add the details that will give our annoying friend the character and attitude he showed in Return of the Jedi. Draw the curvy lines that create the details in his long ears. Next add some of the finer details like the tufts of hair on his head, ears and face. Add lines for the bags under his crazed eyes. Draw the pupils next. And finally, add three lines on his forehead to show a little stress taking its toll.
Step Five:
Erase some parts of the original face guidelines, leaving the one guideline going from the top of his head to the tip of his beak. Now that the guidelines have served their purpose, we no longer need them. But the beak line will help us in the next step.
Step Six
Time to tackle drawing the beak! Near where the bridge of his nose would be (if he had one), draw two curved lines out toward the bottom of his face. Next, starting from the center of the beak guideline that we kept, draw a series of "V" shapes emanating out toward the edges of the beak lines, to create the markings on his beak. Now you can erase that original beak guideline, we no longer need it.
Step Seven:
The final step in the drawing phase will be creating the collar of fur around his neck. First, draw a half-circle around his neck. Then draw a series of "V" shapes farther out, wrapping around the neck, to create the fur lines.
Step Eight:
Once you have all of the details sketched to your liking, it's time to create the final drawing by inking the pencil lines. I used a Micron pen to finish my drawing, but any black pen will do for our purposes.
Step Nine:
If you want to finish your drawing of Salacious Crumb with color, you have several options like markers, crayons, watercolor or even pixels (by scanning the drawing into your computer and using a program such as Photoshop or Painter to digitally color the image).
