Mouse Droid Cat Toy

Humans aren't the only ones who like to play with Star Wars toys. Treat your pet cat to a selection of homemade toys filled with catnip. By using fabric, felt, and a needle and thread you can create a toy worthy of your favorite feline.

What You Need:

  • Felt squares
  • Straight pins
  • Needle and black thread
  • Black embroidery thread
  • Scissors
  • Pillow stuffing or tissues
  • Dried organic catnip (available at pet stores)
  • Pencil
  • Scrap paper
  • Star Wars patterned fabric (optional)

To Make a Mouse Droid:

[ Playing Cat and Mouse Droid ] 1. Look at pictures of a mouse droid in the databank and sketch the pattern freehand. Many droids like the mouse droid (and the "gonk" power droid) are made of simple geometric shapes like rectangles, squares and hexagons. Cut different shapes out on the scrap paper to make patterns to cut out of the felt squares.

[ Playing Cat and Mouse Droid ] 2. Place the patterns you made on the colored felt squares. Most droids like this one are gray or black, but feel free to make your own droid from different colors if you want.

[ Playing Cat and Mouse Droid ] 3 Next you'll want a parent or another adult to sew together the droid together. Be sure to secure the felt pieces together with straight pins. Then sew the felt together by hand using a simple stitch. Make sure to allow a space for stuffing the droid.

[ Playing Cat and Mouse Droid ] 4. Stuff the felt droid by gently stuffing it using tissues or pillow filler. Use an unsharpened pencil to help move the stuffing into the harder-to-reach places of the droid.

[ Playing Cat and Mouse Droid ] 5. When the droid is almost full, make a cone funnel out of scrap paper and put one end in the opening of the droid. Carefully dump catnip into the funnel so it fills in the droid and mixes with the tissue or pillow filler.

[ Playing Cat and Mouse Droid ] 6. Once you have the desired amount of catnip in the droid, have an adult sew the rest of it shut.

[ Playing Cat and Mouse Droid ] 7. Add features to your droid using other bits of felt or by sewing on details with thicker embroidery thread. Make sure the pieces are sewn on well so your cat can't easily tear or chew them off.

[ Playing Cat and Mouse Droid ] 8. For the safety of your kitty, do not sew or glue on googley eyes, fake fur trim or buttons.

Experiment with other shapes to make more elaborate droids such as the gonk power droid, C-3PO and R2-D2!
