The effectiveness of droid starfighters has been debated in strategic circles for generations. While droid starfighters are capable of maneuvers that would crush even the sturdiest organic pilot, they lack the resourcefulness and cunning that living pilots bring into combat. To counter their shortcomings, vulture droids often attack en masse. Like the ground-based battle droid infantry, vulture droids were, for a time, controlled by a central command ship, but later generations were granted a limited degree of independence. When not in flight, the droid starfighter can transform into a walking mode allowing them to be used in surface patrols.
During the Battle of Naboo the Trade Federation launched swarms of vulture droids from their battleship's cavernous hangars, attacking the small number of Naboo starfighters defending the planet.
As the Clone Wars erupted, a splinter faction of the Trade Federation led by Nute Gunray pledged a huge supply of vulture droids to the growing Separatist fleet. Painted with the blue and white hexagonal sigils of the Confederacy, vulture droids would plague Jedi and clone pilots on many battlefronts.
To counter the starfighters of the Separatists, the clone space forces deployed a variety of combat craft, including the heavily armed ARC-170 fighter. Though the vulture droid was more agile than the ARC-170, seasoned tailgunners could track the nimble fighters to prevent the vultures from getting a target-lock.
The elegant Naboo N-1 starfighters flew against the vulture droids during the battle to liberate the peaceful planet from the invading Trade Federation. At the time, the vulture droids were coordinated from a Droid Control Ship, and the destruction of the central battleship shut down the vultures.
A sturdier, heavier cousin to the vulture droid, the hyena droids featured an armored double-hull built to carry explosive ordnance.
