    AT-ST Walker

While not as imposing as its larger AT-AT walker cousin, the AT-ST nonetheless served as a significant addition to the Imperial side of battlefields in the Galactic Civil War. The two-man craft is lightly armed with chin-mounted laser cannons, and side-mounted weapon pods. The two-legged transport, dubbed the scout walker by many, serves as a reconnaisance and patrol vehicle, often flanking approaching AT-ATs and mopping up infantry that sneaks past the larger walkers. The Imperials used AT-STs in both the Battle of Hoth and the Battle of Endor.

History

AT-ST fighting during the Battle of Endor

During the Galactic Civil War, scout walkers proved effective not only as escorts for larger AT-ATs, but also as vehicles undertaking independent operations such as reconnaissance, patrols and anti-infantry missions. The AT-ST’s speed and maneuverability made it a valuable component of the Imperial arsenal.

  • The All Terrain Scout Transport was a descendent of two-legged walkers that saw service during the Clone Wars and the early days of the Empire. Used primarily for recon by clone troopers, the Republic’s AT-RT lacked the armor of later scout-walker models. A later model, the AT-DP, served as a bridge between the open-cockpit AT-RT and the larger, more powerful AT-ST.

  • AT-STs accompanied General Veers’ AT-AT walkers across the snow-covered plains of Hoth during the Empire’s attack on Echo Base. Far more nimble and maneuverable than AT-ATs, the AT-STs tested rebel defenses and protected their bigger cousins against attacks by rebel infantry.

  • On Endor, the Empire made extensive use of AT-STs as patrol vehicles. Endor’s vast forests and tangled undergrowth hampered the effectiveness of AT-ATs for combat operations, but the smaller AT-STs were able to operate well beneath the forest canopy, and had the firepower to deal with any threat to the shield generator protecting the Death Star.

  • Like most Imperial personnel on Endor, scout-walker pilots doubted the forest moon’s native Ewoks posed any threat. For them, the Ewoks were primitive tree-dwellers occasionally glimpsed during a patrol – if the Empire faced any real danger on Endor, it would come from rebel insurgents sent to sabotage the Death Star’s construction.

  • The Empire was wrong to take the Ewoks so lightly. The furry warriors knew their home forest and used the terrain to neutralize the Empire’s technological advantages. The Ewoks saw the paths followed by AT-STs on patrol and set up log traps on either side of that route, staving in the scout walkers’ armored heads with wooden battering rams.

  • The Ewoks also scattered logs across the AT-STs’ paths. The scout walkers tried to keep their footing on this shifting surface, but crashed to the forest floor, where their crews were easy prey for marauding Ewoks.

  • More direct assaults also proved effective against scout walkers – Chewbacca and a pair of Ewok warriors swung down from the trees to land atop an AT-ST, taking over the vehicle after a brief tussle with its crew.

  • Chewie then drove the scout walker to the Empire’s bunker, where Han Solo thought of the idea of using the vehicle in a ruse to bring the Imperials out of hiding and blow up the shield generator.

    AT-RT Walker

While clone troopers were best deployed in large numbers, articulated battlefield armor such as this Republic scout walker transformed a single clone trooper into a formidable anti-infantry unit. Designed primarily as a reconnaissance vehicle, this two-legged open-cockpit walker is nonetheless swift and heavily armed, letting a clone trooper cut through battle droids easily. It was employed in such campaigns as the Battle of Kashyyyk. It was the precursor to the All Terrain Scout Transport seen during the Galactic Civil War.

    Endor

Secluded in a remote corner of the galaxy, the forest moon of Endor would easily have been overlooked by history were it not for the decisive battle that occurred there. The lush, forest home of the Ewok species is the gravesite of Darth Vader and the Empire itself. It was here that the Rebel Alliance won its most crucial victory over the Galactic Empire.

    AT-DP Walker

AT-DP (All Terrain Defence Pod) walkers were among the fastest Imperial vehicles of their type, designed primarily for patrols and scouting missions. They had more nefarious purposes, however. When the Empire wanted more land on the Outer Rim planet of Lothal, AT-DPs were used to quickly clear out farmers from their property. The walking tanks were also employed to combat rebel threats, including the crew of the Ghost.

    Ewok

The Ewoks are sentient furred bipeds native to the moon of Endor. They are curious individuals that stand about one meter tall. They are extremely skilled in forest survival and the construction of primitive technology like gliders and catapults. They are quick learners when exposed to advanced technology, however. The Ewoks accepted members of the Rebel Alliance into their tribe, and allied themselves to their cause. The Ewoks helped in the ground battle to destroy the Imperial shield generator built in their forests, and their primitive weapons felled the stormtroopers and the scout walkers of the Empire. Their help paved the way to victory at the Battle of Endor.
