    Rebel Alliance

The Rebel Alliance stood bravely against the evil of the Galactic Empire, never backing down despite overwhelming odds. Formed from resistance movements that arose during the Clone Wars, the Rebellion worked in secret for decades to overthrow the Emperor and restore democracy to the galaxy. Eventually, armed with the firepower of ships like the X-wing and A-wing, and the leadership of figures including Princess Leia and Admiral Ackbar, the Rebel Alliance triumphed over the Empire at the Battle of Endor.

History

A droid gunship shooting at the Onderon Rebel cell

The origins of the Rebel Alliance dated back to the Clone Wars, when the Jedi helped create resistance units on Separatist-held worlds. Ironically, Anakin Skywalker proposed this plan to the Jedi Council and helped create one such militia, training resistance fighters on Onderon. The Onderon cell, led by Steela and Saw Gerrera, fought against the Separatist puppet Sanjay Rash and his droid armies, eventually overthrowing Rash and restoring King Ramsis Dendup to his throne. Some of these resistance movements would continue their activities after the victorious Republic became the Empire, though it would be years before such cells coalesced into an organized Rebellion with centralized leadership.

Senators Amidala, Organa, Mothma, and others gathering privately

The Rebellion’s origins could also be traced to clandestine meetings of Senators that began in the final days of the Republic. Senators such as Mon Mothma, Bail Organa and Padmé Amidala gathered secretly on Coruscant, concerned about the wartime powers accumulated by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. Publicly, these Senators backed efforts to shame Palpatine into giving up his emergency powers. Privately, they began preparations for a time when resistance might have to progress beyond political arguments in the Senate, but it would prove to be a long and extremely difficult process to unite those opposed to the Empire under a single banner. Mothma and Organa would become key rebel leaders, a mantle also taken up by Bail’s adopted daughter Leia.

Kanan Jarrus and Bail Organa aboard the Tantive IV

As the Empire tightened its grip on the galaxy, resistance movements sprang up on a number of worlds. Most were strictly local movements, determined to free an individual planet or star system from Imperial rule. Such movements risked running afoul of the Empire’s intelligence agents, Inquisitors and enforcers, who dealt ruthlessly with any sign of larger-scale resistance. One crew of rebels, led by the Twi’lek pilot Hera Syndulla, sprang up on the Outer Rim world of Lothal. Syndulla’s band -- whose ranks also included former Padawan Kanan Jarrus, the Force-sensitive orphan Ezra Bridger, Mandalorian demolitions expert Sabine Wren, Lasat warrior Garazeb “Zeb” Orrellos, and the droid Chopper -- worked to disrupt Imperial operations on Lothal and other Outer Rim worlds, receiving support from operatives such as the mysterious Fulcrum. In time, under the leadership of Bail Organa and Mon Mothma, such local groups combined their efforts into a full-blown Alliance dedicated to overthrowing Palpatine and restoring the Republic.

The Ghost hovering amidst the Rebel Fleet

After narrowly escaping Imperial capture, the Ghost crew delivered Mon Mothma to a precise meeting point away from the eyes of the Empire: Dantooine. There, she formally announced her resignation from the Senate and put out a call for others to join in her in the fight against the Empire. As more and more rebel cells arrived, the Rebel Alliance was born.

As the Rebellion grew more organized and gained support in the Imperial Senate, the Empire sought to crush resistance by completing construction of the Death Star, an armored battle station with enough firepower to destroy an entire planet. Rebel spies stole the Death Star plans and delivered them to Princess Leia Organa, an Imperial Senator and a member of the Alliance. Darth Vader captured Leia’s starship above Tatooine, but the princess had hidden the plans in the memory banks of R2-D2.

Determined to crush the Rebellion, Grand Moff Tarkin demonstrated the Death Star’s power by incinerating Bail Organa’s homeworld of Alderaan. He allowed Leia to escape, trailing her to the principal Rebel base on the moon Yavin 4. The Rebels countered with a desperate plan, sending squadrons of starfighters up against the battle station. Before the Death Star could destroy Yavin 4, Luke Skywalker used the Force to guide a proton torpedo into an exhaust port leading to the battle station’s main reactor. The destruction of the Death Star saved the Alliance -- and the fires of resistance began to spread among the Empire’s worlds.

Princess Leia and the Rebel Alliance

The Empire struck back with an overwhelming display of military might, brutally cracking down on dissent and sending its warships across the galaxy in search of the Rebels’ new principal base. After an Imperial probe droid discovered Echo Base on the ice planet Hoth, the Alliance’s General Rieekan ordered an immediate evacuation. Rieekan’s quick decision saved many lives and prevented a disaster, but the Rebels still suffered a terrible defeat. Battered but unbowed, the Alliance regrouped at a prearranged rendezvous point, forming a deep-space convoy of warships in an effort to stay ahead of Imperial hunters.

Generals Organa and Solo lead the Rebel Strike Team on Endor

Under the direction of Mon Mothma and Admiral Ackbar, the Rebel fleet gathered at Sullust for an all-out attack on the second Death Star, under construction above the Forest Moon of Endor. The Alliance had learned that Emperor Palpatine was personally overseeing this new project, and risked a confrontation in hopes of ending the war with a quick strike. Mothma and Ackbar didn’t know Palpatine had leaked the information about the battle station and his presence aboard it. His trap very nearly succeeded: the Rebels couldn’t match the firepower of the Imperial fleet, let alone a Death Star that turned out to be fully operational. But a strike team led by Leia and Han Solo destroyed the shield generator protecting the Death Star, allowing Lando Calrissian and Wedge Antilles to fly into the superstructure and blow up the station’s main reactor.

Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker managed to awaken the good slumbering in Darth Vader. Vader killed Palpatine, an act of sacrifice that left the Empire leaderless and ended Sith rule of the galaxy.

  • With the Republic bogged down against battle droids during the Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker proposed training fighters to lead insurgent movements on Separatist planets. Together with his Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex, Anakin taught Onderon’s resistance fighters how to organize themselves and gave them pointers for taking out Separatist units. Such militias would serve as starting points for a growing rebel movement against the Empire.

  • Resistance movements such as Onderon’s depended as much on leadership as they did on military hardware. Leaders such as Steela Gerrera had to soothe the egos of key rebels and get cell members to agree on their objectives. Such leadership would prove crucial in the struggle against the Empire.

  • As the Clone Wars wound down, a number of Republic senators met to share their concerns about Supreme Chancellor Palpatine’s vast array of wartime powers. These seeds of resistance would one day grow into the Rebel Alliance, with former Senators such as Bail Organa and Mon Mothma becoming symbols of the movement to restore the Republic.

  • Many of the early resistance movements on Imperial worlds were strictly local – the Empire moved ruthlessly to combat any dissent spreading between star systems. Groups such as Hera Syndulla’s Lothal rebels launched most of their operations without consulting resistance movements elsewhere. But the lessons learned by such local cells would prove critical in time.

  • Attacks on the Empire and the symbols of its power told the increasingly downtrodden people of the galaxy that Palpatine’s regime was not in fact all-powerful. The Empire could be embarrassed and its programs derailed -- and perhaps one day it might be defeated.

  • The construction of the Death Star and its planet-killing superlaser threatened to extinguish all resistance to Imperial rule. Rebel spies stole the plans to the battle station and gave them to Princess Leia Organa, who fled to Tatooine but was captured by Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer. When Vader’s troops stormed Leia’s starship, her crew sacrificed their lives to buy the princess time – which she used to conceal the plans in the memory banks of R2-D2.

  • Luke Skywalker and Han Solo rescued Leia from the Death Star and brought the plans to the rebel base on Yavin 4. There, the Alliance’s General Dodonna concocted a desperate plan: send X-wing fighters armed with proton torpedos against the Death Star. A precise hit on an exhaust port could start a chain reaction that would overload the battle station’s main reactor, destroying it.

  • TIE fighters dueled the rebel X-wings and Y-wings above the Death Star’s surface, with Darth Vader leading the Imperial defenses and shooting down many rebel pilots. All the while, the Death Star was creeping nearer to Yavin 4, waiting to fire on the moon and end the Rebellion.

  • Before the Death Star could incinerate Yavin 4, Luke fired the fateful shot that destroyed the battle station. The rebels had won an enormous victory, and word of the Death Star’s demise fanned the flames of resistance to the Imperial war machine.

  • The Empire hunted the rebels across the galaxy, forcing them to find new bases and hide from the Imperial starfleet. Princess Leia’s rebel cell relocated to the frozen planet of Hoth, where the Alliance’s freedom fighters struggled to adapt their equipment to the cold.

  • The rebels had barely settled in on Hoth when the Empire discovered their base and stormed it with a task force of Star Destroyers in space and an invasion force of AT-ATs on land. Some rebel units escaped into space, but the battle was a disaster for the Alliance.

  • The rebel units that did escape gathered in deep space, moving in convoys in hopes of evading the Empire’s warships. The Alliance had been dealt a grievous blow, but it still survived.

  • The Rebellion’s hopes seemed to dim further when Alliance leaders learned the Empire was secretly constructing a new, more powerful Death Star to replace the one destroyed at Yavin. But they also learned that the Emperor was aboard this new battle station – and decided to risk everything in a raid on its construction site.

  • While the Alliance fleet prepared its attack, Han Solo led a commando team to the Forest Moon of Endor. The team’s mission: destroy the shield generator protecting the Death Star in orbit above.

  • Unfortunately, the Emperor himself had leaked word of his presence to the Alliance. The Death Star was operational, and the Alliance was rushing into a trap. While Solo’s commandos battled stormtroopers protecting the shield generator, the rebel fleet traded hammer blows with Imperial warships.

  • Han’s team destroyed the shield generator, allowing Lando Calrissian and Wedge Antilles to fly into the Death Star superstructure and destroy the battle station. The rebels and their Ewok allies celebrated the greatest victory of the rebel cause, while bracing themselves for a tough fight against the remnants of the Imperial war machine.

Princess Leia Organa was one of the greatest leaders of the Rebel Alliance, fearless on the battlefield and dedicated to ending the Empire’s tyranny. Daughter of Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker, sister of Luke Skywalker, and with a soft spot for scoundrels, Leia ranked among the galaxy’s great heroes. But life under the New Republic proved difficult for her. Sidelined by a new generation of political leaders, she struck out on her own to oppose the First Order as founder of the Resistance. These setbacks in her political career were accompanied by more personal losses, which she endured with her seemingly inexhaustible will.

    Mon Calamari Star Cruiser

The gentle Mon Calamari people brought more than their determination to restore freedom to the galaxy when they joined the Rebel Alliance. They also brought a fleet of powerful capital ships. These immense vehicles were a startling contrast to the straight-lined shapes favored by the Imperial fleet. Whereas the Imperial Star Destroyer resembles a pointed dagger in shape, a Mon Calamari cruiser lacks hard angles, and is covered with ovoid forms suggesting an organic sculpture. Despite their smooth lines, these vessels pack an enormous punch. Turbolasers, ion cannons, tractor beam projectors and shield generators dot the flowing surface of the ships.

A member of Alderaan's royal family and the planet's representative to the Republic Senate since the time of the Clone Wars, Bail Organa earned respect on Coruscant for his honesty and his commitment to justice. Prior to the fall of the Republic, Bail served alongside Senator Padmé Amidala as a member of Chancellor Palpatine's Loyalist Committee. The two became close friends, and recruited like-minded allies to prevent Palpatine's alarming grabs for power. At the end of the war, Bail Organa adopted Padmé's daughter Leia and raised her as an Alderaanian princess. While representing Alderaan in the Imperial Senate, he continued to work secretly with allies such as Mon Mothma and Ahsoka Tano to assist rebel cells scattered across the galaxy, working towards the day that a unified Rebellion could emerge.
