Galactic Senate

Forum of the People

Details

Description

At the height of its rule, the Galactic Republic was governed by a body of Senators representing the many worlds of the galaxy. Within the cavernous Senate rotunda, hundreds of politicians would fill the viewing platforms that lined the curved walls. When a Senator wished to speak, the platform would detach and float to the center of the auditorium for all to see.

Palpatine

Palpatine

Beginning his political career in the Republic as a Senator from Naboo, Palpatine soon ascended to the position of Chancellor. Once the Clone Wars erupted, the Senate's inability to efficiently wage war on scattered fronts allowed him to funnel more power to himself, effectively circumventing the bureaucracy of the Senate. Following the Clone Wars, Palpatine declared himself Emperor of the New Order of the Galactic Empire, disbanding the Senate and passing control down to regional governors and the military.

Padmé Amidala

Padmé
Amidala

An idealist during a time of corruption and war in the Galactic Senate, Padmé Amidala was determined to fix what wrongs she could in the ailing Republic, serving its Senate and her idyllic home planet of Naboo. The onset of the Clone Wars, however, transformed the Republic. Watching more and more powers funneled to Palpatine's office, she joined a small group of senators wary of Palpatine's growing power. Meeting in secret, she became part of the movement that would eventually become the Rebel Alliance.

Supreme Chancellor Valorum

Supreme Chancellor Valorum

Chancellor Valorum, though well-meaning, was fated to be the last Supreme Chancellor to hold that office before the Galactic Republic crumbled to make way for an oppressive Empire. During the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo, Valorum was bound by Senate procedure to act on Senator Amidala's behalf, leading to a Vote of No Confidence in his authority by Amidala herself, who acted on advice by Palpatine. As a result, Valorum was voted out of the office and replaced by Palpatine.

Bail Organa

Bail Organa

During the Clone Wars, the Senate willingly relinquished more executive powers to Chancellor Palpatine, all in the name of increased security. Though dismayed, Organa, the Senator of Alderaan, felt that to criticize such actions would result in being branded a traitor, so he was careful to conceal his misgivings. He spoke of them only in a small audience of like-minded Senators -- an audience that would eventually form the beginning of the Rebel Alliance.

Lott Dod

Lott Dod

Lott Dod was the Trade Federation representative in the Galactic Senate during the events of the siege of Naboo. Countering Queen Amidala's allegations of a Trade Federation invasion of her home planet, Dod suggested a commission be appointed to investigate -- essentially a stalling tactic in disguise. Unwilling to wait for a commission to make a decision, Amidala heeded Palpatine's advice and declared a Vote of No Confidence in the Senate's Chancellor Valorum, removing him from office. Palpatine was then appointed in his place.
