A resourceful astromech droid, R2-D2 served Padmé Amidala, Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker in turn, showing great bravery in rescuing his masters and their friends from many perils. A skilled starship mechanic and fighter pilot's assistant, he formed an unlikely but enduring friendship with the fussy protocol droid C-3PO.
R2-D2's mechanical body contains numerous arms tipped with all manner of useful tools, from welding torches to computer interfaces. Like other astromechs, his language is a cacophony of beeps and whistles understandable only by some other droids. But the spunky little droid's abundant personality generally makes his meaning plain enough.
C-3PO and R2-D2 bicker a lot, but they are true friends and counterparts. Threepio understands Artoo's binary machine language, and often translates it for their non-droid friends.
R2-D2 served aboard the Royal Naboo Starship during Queen Amidala's reign, and later served Padmé when she became Senator.
Anakin Skywalker used R2-D2 aboard his Jedi starfighter throughout the Clone Wars. The two shared many adventures together, and Anakin refused to have R2-D2's memory erased, despite that being standard military procedure to prevent the interception of tactical plans.
Luke purchased R2-D2 from Jawa traders not knowing that the little astromech was in fact a Rebel droid owned by the Royal House of Alderaan -- the noble family where his long lost twin sister could be found.
R2-D2 became the property of the House of Alderaan after the Clone Wars. During the Galactic Civil War, Princess Leia used the little droid to hide the stolen Death Star plans from her Imperial pursuers.
