A venerable if maverick Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn was a student of the living Force. Unlike other Jedi Masters, who often lose themselves in the meditation of the unifying Force, Qui-Gon Jinn lived for the moment, espousing a philosophy of "feel, don't think -- use your instincts." Were it not for Qui-Gon's unruly views, he would have undoubtedly been on the Jedi Council.
On Tatooine, Qui-Gon discovered a young slave boy named Anakin Skywalker who was strong in the Force. Sensing the boy's potential, Qui-Gon liberated Anakin from slavery. The Jedi Master presented Anakin to the Jedi Council, but the council felt Anakin's future seemed clouded and uncertain. They deemed the boy too old to begin training and dangerously full of fear and anger. They refused to allow Qui-Gon to train Anakin, but rescinded their decision to fulfill Qui-Gon's dying wish.
As Obi-Wan's master, Qui-Gon and Kenobi held a close bond. But as Obi-Wan got older, he began to worry about his mentor's somewhat rebellious nature. Qui-Gon's dying wish was for Obi-Wan to take Anakin Skywalker as his Padawan.
Qui-Gon discovered Anakin Skywalker as a slave boy in the Tatooine town of Mos Espa. Qui-Gon believed that Anakin was the Chosen One spoken of in an ancient Jedi prophecy that foretold that he would bring balance to the Force.
Some believe Qui-Gon Jinn inherited his maverick ways from his former Jedi Master, Dooku. The death of Qui-Gon preceded Dooku's departure from the Jedi Order.
Qui-Gon was the first Jedi Master to have crossed blades with a Sith Lord in centuries -- and survive. Jinn was ambushed by Maul while departing Tatooine, and escaped to tell the Jedi Council that the Sith had returned. Maul later killed Jinn during the Battle of Naboo.
When Anakin Skywalker met Qui-Gon Jinn, the boy offered the elder Jedi shelter in his hovel. Qui-Gon recognized that Anakin was special, and told Shmi that he had the potential to be a Jedi. Shmi entrusted Anakin to Qui-Gon's care, wishing for Anakin to have a life beyond slavery.
