17. Wesa Wants Brains: Zombie Gungans

In 2003, the Star Wars: Republic comics series really started heating up. Brandishing a banner that proclaimed it "A CLONE WARS COMIC," the action turned to the epic conflict that pit Republic and Jedi against Separatist and Sith. Two new villains were added to the dramatis personae: the Sith acolyte Asajj Ventress and the indestructible bounty hunter Durge.

To show that this duo meant business, issues #51-52 told a tale of their attack on the Naboo moon of Ohma-Dun. The Separatists poison the Gungan colony with a bio-plague that wipes out the colonists. When the Jedi arrive they are greeted by a two-page spread of dead Gungans, covered in blistering boils. Soon, the Jedi too start breaking out in these scarlet blemishes, but that's just the start of the unpleasantness. When Asajj really starts getting nasty, she somehow uses the Force to animate the Gungan corpses to attack the Jedi.

Writer Haden Blackman still expresses some disbelief that the powers that be let him get away with what he wrote. "I discovered a way to kill Gungans twice," he says.
