7. The Immolation of Anakin Skywalker

It's what undoubtedly earned Episode III its PG-13 rating. Bad enough Anakin gets three limbs amputated in one deft stroke of Obi-Wan's blade, but he hits the searing volcanic rock hard and slides to the lip of a lava floe where he bursts into flames. During the scoring sessions at Abbey Road studios, members of the London Symphony Orchestra were heard to audibly gasp at Anakin's fate as they watched the rough-cut of the sequence they were about to score.

Creature Shop Creative Supervisor Dave Elsey spent a great deal of time developing Anakin's burnt look, combining his practical forensic knowledge of severe burns with the example of unmasked Vader seen in Episode VI. "When I went back to George Lucas, I asked, 'Look, how much can we get away with here? How nasty can we make it?' And he basically just said, 'Do what you have to,'" Elsey recalls.

The end result is the disturbing image of Anakin ablaze, his anguished cries of pain and betrayal piercing through the crackling of the flames. It's memorable, especially for youngsters who may have looked up to Anakin's daredevil ways; it's a reminder that actions do have consequences.
