"I want to make a mark in this industry and in doing so, be a part of the removal of the stigma of women in the industry," Staggs says. "Being a woman in a male-dominated field is one of the biggest challenges I face as an artist. At conventions, I am often asked, 'Who is the artist?' while I am sitting at the table drawing. Girls can draw!"
With that goal in mind, Staggs says she has a few pointers for women wanting to pursue a career in art and illustration.
"I am a firm believer in letting the art speak for me," Staggs explains. "But I have found that sometimes it is not loud enough, so my best advice is to learn to speak up for yourself and be as loud as your art. I am still working on this part myself."
"Draw something every day," Staggs adds. "It doesn't matter what it is, just draw. Always be on the look out for something new to learn. The lesson can happen at any time. Also, go to conventions to get your work seen and meet as many folks as you can. As good as your work may be, in this business it's also about who you know."
As Staggs continues to work on upcoming Star Wars projects, she admits that there are times when she feels like the luckiest fan in the world.
"This is truly a dream come true for me," Staggs says. "I have never imagined myself doing anything else but art. To be able to do this for a living, although not the easiest way, I know I am happy doing it. And getting the opportunity to work on Star Wars and meet the people involved. I am still and will always be a fan first."
