"In the entertainment business, artwork has to be approved by so many people -- inevitably there will be folks who don't agree on what they want for an image," Busch says. "This often means changes back and forth until I can come up with a solution that will make everyone happy. I'm also always looking to evolve and try fresh techniques and stylistic choices to grow as an artist. This is something I often want to do, but have a hard time convincing clients of new directions. I've created my own niche in the illustration world doing what I do. Since that is what I'm know for, that's why I'm hired, and many clients aren't interested in me trying out something new."
In addition to juggling illustration projects from varied clients, Busch says he likes to explore other creative outlets, and finding other ways to express his ideas including screenwriting and moviemaking. He published an illustrated screenplay called Crisis and has recently filmed an independent horror movie called Conjure, staring himself and fellow Star Wars artist Sarah Wilkinson.
"Conjure is a supernatural thriller in which I actually play myself," Busch explains. "It's a fictional story, but many of the characters and events are based on real life, so it helps add to the believability factor. In fact, the movie even has a cameo with actor Anthony Daniels (C-3PO). I've had three test screenings and the audience reaction has been extremely positive."
A positive fan reaction is nothing new for Busch. Attending Celebration III and this year's San Diego Comic-Con International, Busch says that direct interaction with the very people who seek out his work makes all his hard work worthwhile.
"You have to realize, being an illustrator, writer, filmmaker, or any kind of artist, you spend a lot of time alone," Busch explains. "I may go for months at a time working on various projects into the wee hours of the night. Many times you second guess yourself as an artist and wonder if what you're doing is worthwhile. Meeting fans at shows is sometimes few and far between, but the rewarding feeling of knowing I'm able to touch people in some ways is just incredible."
