From the Movies
The only tangible clue Obi-Wan Kenobi had regarding the identity of the villains behind Senator Padmé Amidala's assassination attempts was a small, fork-shaped dart used to deliver a deadly toxin. Kenobi took the evidence to the analysis laboratories in the Jedi Temple, where it was carefully examined by droids to no avail. According to the SP-4 and JN-66 droids, the dart's markings did not correspond with those of any known culture. The forensic droids concluded that the dart most likely was self-crafted by a lone warrior.Dissatisfied with these findings, Obi-Wan ventured to the dilapidated Coco Town area of Coruscant, and conferred with his old friend Dexter Jettster. The grizzled local proprietor was an expert in a wide variety of subjects, and was easily able to identify the projectile. The cuts on the side of the dart led Dexter to recognize it as a Kamino saberdart, a rare artifact he had not seen since his prospecting days on Subterrel.
Armed with this information, Kenobi was able to locate the stormy world of Kamino, as well as the dart's owner, a bounty hunter named Jango Fett. The discoveries on Kamino were continuing links in a mysterious chain of events that would eventually doom the Galactic Republic.
From the Expanded Universe
Though the fork-shaped Kamino saberdart is an exotic weapon, the use of poison darts is troublingly common in the underworld blood trade. The Assassin's Guild and the Malkite Poisoners regularly employ such silent weapons. Malkite themfar and Fex-M3 nerve toxins are among the most potent dart coatings and can cause death in less than 10 seconds. The Kamino saberdart includes a small poison reservoir at its base and the central tine acts as the injector needle. The bounty hunter Jodo Kast, like Jango Fett, incorporated poison dart launchers into his Mandalorian armor. His preferred toxin was Sennari, a fast-acting and lethal agent.Behind the Scenes
In the shooting script for Episode II, the weapon was identified as a Kamino kyberdart. It was later changed to saberdart. Interestingly enough, the prefix "kyber" can trace its roots back to some of the early A New Hope drafts, when the original Episode IV's "McGuffin" was a Force-enhancing item known as the kyber crystal. Keywords: Databank - Episode II
