From the Movies

A representative from this alien species is a bipedal humanoid with blue-gray skin, double rows of cheekbones, a long, tapered proboscis, four conelets atop the skull, three-fingered hands, and a pair of dark, glassy eyes.

From the Expanded Universe

On their homeworld, the H'nemthe males outnumber the females 20 to one. Much of their culture has been shaped by this disparity between genders, and has resulted in a strange mating ritual. After mating, a female H'nemthe ceremonially eviscerates the male, killing him with her razor-sharp tongue.

To a H'nemthe, procreation is the ultimate spiritual fulfillment in their rigidly structured society. The discovery of true love and the creation of new life is not taken lightly by H'nemthe males, who must sacrifice their lives to continue their bloodline. H'nemthe females are protected by law, and virgins are very rarely permitted to leave the planet. Strict traditions ensure that a H'nemthe virgin remains a devout vegetarian, not tasting flesh until they consummate their love with a doomed mate. As such, female H'nemthe tend to be very sheltered and na?ve.

The quartet of cones atop a H'nemthe's head contain sensory organs that detect heat differences in their environment and emotional differences in other creatures. Using these cones, H'nemthe have become very efficient hunters.

Behind the Scenes

The H'nemthe seen in the Mos Eisley Cantina was revealed to be a female named M'iiyoom Onith in Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina. During production, the alien was simply known as "Yam Nose." The H'nemthe mask was re-used for a background alien in Return of the Jedi.
