clone trooper pilots![]()
![]() From the MoviesThe clone troopers that stormed the world of Geonosis during the first battle of the Clone Wars were fully supported by air and ground vehicles. Piloting the Republic attack gunships were specially trained clone trooper pilots. Their uniforms bore yellow markings and specialized helmets. As the Clone Wars spread and the nature of combat became more specialized, the pilot ranks also grew. Clone starfighter pilots operated the ARC-170 and V-wing fighters that engaged Separatist forces in the depths of space or the skies of scattered worlds. They wore specialized equipment that aided in the piloting of their advanced craft.During the Battle of Coruscant, Squad Seven -- led by Clone Commander Odd Ball -- was instrumental in holding off enemy forces and allowing the Jedi duo of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker infiltrate General Grievous' fleeing flagship.
From the Expanded UniverseThe standardized accelerated training undergone by the clone trooper ranks is modular, and distinct units can be supplemented or augmented with military specialties. Some clone trooper pilot units are better trained to handle certain vehicles. The CT 5-series of pilots are generally recognized to be the best trained to handle the Jadthu-class landing ships. The clone trooper starfighter pilots received broad cross-training with all the standard starfighters of the Republic, including the V-19 Torrents, the V-wing, and the ARC-170. Where they differed primarily was in standard equipment -- units would wear piloting gear specially suited to their assigned vessels. However, since each clone was of the same size, this gear could be easily swapped between units should the starfighter rosters change due to mission needs or attrition. The ARC-170 pilots wore specialized helmets that removed combat glare. Their chest plates housed forced-ox rebreathers that allowed them a slim chance of survival should severe damage to their craft force extravehicular exposure.
Behind the ScenesThe clone trooper pilot helmets seen in Attack of the Clones were developed relatively late in production through concept sketches based on AT-AT driver and TIE pilot designs. Those worn by the starfighter pilots in Episode III more closely resembled the TIE pilots. The open-faced helmets and costumes were computer-generated, mapped over the real photographic element of actor Temuera Morrison's head. Keywords: Databank - The Clone Wars, Databank - Expanded Universe, Databank - Episode II, Databank - Episode III Filed under: Vault, Organization
