During her Senate career, Mon Mothma was a friend and mentor to other planetary leaders, including Naboo's Padmé Amidala. She encouraged Padmé to have faith in her speaking abilities and powers of persuasion.
Mothma worked with Bail Organa, Padmé and others to defeat legislation authorizing reckless increases in military spending. But while they had some successes, they also ran into determined opposition from powerful interests in the Republic.
The war was very profitable for some factions of the Republic -- such as Kamino's cloners, represented by Senator Halle Burtoni. The pro-war Senators accused Mothma and others opposed to the conflict of being naive, unpatriotic or even treasonous.
Mothma continued to work tirelessly for peace, even when it claimed the lives of friends and allies such as Rodia's Onaconda Farr. At Farr's funeral, Mothma swore to herself that she would redouble her efforts to end the Clone Wars.
Mothma was one of the Republic's representatives to peace talks with the Separatists, convened by Mandalore's Duchess Satine. Unfortunately, shadowy interests on both sides worked to ensure such negotiations went nowhere.
In the final days of the Republic, Mothma met secretly with Bail Organa and other Loyalist Senators, arguing that Palpatine had used his wartime powers to become a dictator. In those meetings, the seeds of the Rebel Alliance were planted.
Mothma served as the civilian leader of the Alliance, working to gain allies for the fledgling organization. She consulted with the Rebels' military leaders about critical campaigns, such as the assault on the second Death Star at Endor.
Despite decades of struggle and sacrifice, Mothma regretted every Rebel life lost in the fight against the Empire. Preparing for the assault on Endor, she reminded the assembled Rebels that many Bothan agents had died to discover the Emperor was visiting the Death Star.
Having made her point about the cost of war, Mothma stepped aside so Admiral Ackbar, the Alliance's military leader, could brief the fighter pilots and warship captains about his plan. One way or another, the Galactic Civil War was nearing its end.
