    Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker was a Tatooine farmboy who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest Jedi the galaxy has ever known. Along with his friends Princess Leia and Han Solo, Luke battled the evil Empire, discovered the truth of his parentage, and ended the tyranny of the Sith. A generation later, the location of the famed Jedi master was one of the galaxy’s greatest mysteries. Haunted by Ben Solo’s fall to evil and convinced the Jedi had to end, Luke sought exile on a distant world, ignoring the galaxy’s pleas for help. But his solitude would be interrupted – and Luke Skywalker had one final, momentous role to play in the struggle between good and evil.

History

Luke Skywalker on Tatooine

Raised by his aunt and uncle on a Tatooine moisture farm, Luke Skywalker never knew his mother or father. He knew nothing of the Force or Jedi, but longed for a more exciting life. Soon he would have it. With his Uncle Owen’s purchase of new droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, a chain of events was put in place that would change Luke -- and the galaxy -- forever. Artoo, a plucky astromech droid, wandered off in his first night on the farm, telling C-3PO he had to deliver a message to someone named Obi-Wan Kenobi. When Luke went looking for the lost droid, he was attacked by Tusken Raiders and knocked unconscious. Before he could be taken captive, friendly hermit Ben Kenobi appeared and frightened off the Sand People. Ben revealed that he was indeed Obi-Wan Kenobi, and had something that belonged to Luke’s father: a lightsaber, the weapon of a Jedi. Obi-Wan said that he and Luke’s father were both Jedi Knights, strong with the Force, and good friends. Luke knew none of this, and asked how his father died. The old Jedi said that his former student, Darth Vader, turned to the dark side and killed him.

Obi-Wan and Luke soon discovered that Artoo was indeed carrying a message after all. It was a holorecording of Princess Leia, stating that she had hidden stolen plans for the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the Death Star, in the memory banks of Artoo; she asked that Kenobi deliver the plans to her father on Alderaan. Obi-Wan implored Luke to come with him, but the farmboy refused. However, he and Obi-Wan found that the Jawas who sold his uncle Artoo and Threepio had been slaughtered by stormtroopers -- and they may have traced them back home. Luke raced to the moisture farm, only to find the charred remains of his guardians. Stoic, he decided to leave Tatooine, vowing to learn the ways of the Force and become a Jedi like his father.

Along with hired pilot Han Solo and his co-pilot and friend Chewbacca, Luke, Obi-Wan, and the droids headed for Alderaan aboard the Millennium Falcon. But when they arrived, the planet wasn’t there -- only rubble, as it had been destroyed by the Empire’s Death Star. The Falcon was soon caught in the tractor beam of the giant space station, but it proved fortuitous; Princess Leia was being held there. Luke and Han, in stormtrooper disguises, staged a rescue while Obi-Wan disengaged the tractor beam. The Jedi Master, however, encountered his old student, Darth Vader, and was killed in battle. Luke saw it happen shortly before escaping in the Falcon, and was deeply affected by the loss of his mentor.

The small band of heroes regrouped with the Rebel Alliance on Yavin 4. With the Death Star plans successfully delivered, Luke joined the mission to destroy the battle station, piloting an X-wing under the call sign Red Five. In the ensuing battle, the Rebels suffered heavy losses, and Darth Vader entered the fray in his TIE Advanced. One of the last remaining pilots, Luke flew through the Death Star trench at blinding speed with the goal of shooting a volley of proton torpedoes into a small exhaust port. Vader closed in, ready to destroy Luke's starship -- noting that “the Force is strong with this one” -- but a surprise blast from Han and the Millennium Falcon sent Vader's fighter tumbling into space, clearing Luke for the shot. Calling on the Force with guidance from Obi-Wan’s disembodied voice, the Jedi-to-be delivered a precise shot, and the Death Star was destroyed.

Luke Skywalker training with Yoda on Dagobah

Though the Rebel Alliance had struck a major blow against the Empire with the destruction of the Death Star, the war was far from over. The Alliance built a new secret base on the ice planet Hoth, with Luke now a commander. While out on patrol, Luke spotted what he thought was a meteor impact on the surface -- in reality, it was an Imperial probe droid. Before he could inspect it, however, Luke was viciously attacked by a towering wampa. Though Luke escaped the ice creature’s cave, severing the monster’s arm with his lightsaber, the young Jedi nearly died from the frigid surface temperatures. It was also at this time that he was visited by the spectre of Obi-Wan Kenobi, who instructed him to go to the Dagobah system. There, he would learn the ways of the Force from Yoda, a Jedi Master. Han eventually found Luke, keeping him warm inside a tauntaun’s belly until help could arrive. Luke recovered from his injuries and lead the Rebel defense against the Empire’s ground forces, including massive AT-AT walkers, giving the Alliance time to evacuate the planet.

Luke headed to Dagobah as instructed and found Yoda. He was not what Luke expected -- small, alien, and green, with a unique backwards way of speaking. Luke trained hard, failing often but learning much from his wise Master. During an exercise, the young Jedi saw a vision of his friends in pain; Luke cut his training short -- against Yoda's wishes -- to help them. He left for Cloud City where Darth Vader awaited, hoping to capture Luke and bring him to the Emperor. They dueled, but Luke was outmatched and overpowered. Luke was battered and bloodied in the fight, losing a hand, and the Sith Lord revealed a frightening truth: that he was in fact Luke’s father. Vader wanted his son to join him on the dark side, and together they could overthrow the Emperor and rule the galaxy. Luke was shattered and in disbelief. He refused to turn, managing to escape with his life.

Luke Skywalker as a Jedi Knight on Jabba's Sail Barge

With Han frozen in carbonite and held in Jabba the Hutt’s palace on Tatooine, Luke led a mission to rescue his old friend. Now a powerful Jedi Knight, Luke tried to bargain for Han’s life but the crime lord refused. Through a trap door, he dispatched the Jedi into an underground dungeon and unleashed his massive rancor creature. But to the shock of Jabba and his henchmen, Luke was able to destroy the beast. Incensed, the gangster sentenced Luke and his friends to die in the Sarlacc, but again, the Jedi was underestimated. Luke decimated Jabba’s men, and the group of heroes completed their rescue.

With Han safe, Luke returned to Dagobah to complete his training. Yoda, however, was dying. In his final moments, the old Master told Luke that he required no more lessons, but he had to confront Darth Vader -- who was his true father -- once more. Yoda also told him of another Skywalker, who Obi-Wan would confirm was Leia, his twin sister.

Meanwhile, the Empire was constructing a new Death Star -- with the Emperor personally overseeing its completion. Utilizing stolen schematics, the Rebel Alliance formulated a plan to destroy this new superweapon. Luke joined his friends for the mission on Endor, but departed when he sensed Vader’s presence. Luke believed there was still good in his father, that the Emperor had not driven it from him fully. He tried to convert Vader to the light side, but the Dark Lord claimed it was too late. Instead, he brought Luke before the Emperor on the Death Star. The evil Sith Master looked to turn Luke to the dark side, and goaded him into a duel with his father. When Vader suggested that Leia could be turned to evil, Luke embraced his rage and pummeled his father relentlessly -- giving the Emperor exactly what he wanted. But before he delivered the killing blow, Luke paused, remembering his teachings. Calming himself, Luke threw away his weapon. “I am a Jedi, like my father before me,” he said. The Emperor, confounded by Luke’s actions, unleashed Force lightning upon the young Jedi. Vader rose and threw the Emperor down a deep shaft, his true self reawakened by his son’s love. Luke had one final moment with his father, and escaped the space station before it was destroyed. The once reckless farmboy’s journey was complete: he was a mature Jedi, freedom was restored to the galaxy, and his compassion had saved his father.

Luke Skywalker and R2-D2 after the destruction of his Jedi Academy

After the Battle of Endor, Luke traveled the galaxy with R2-D2, seeking long-forgotten Jedi lore as he pondered how to resurrect the Jedi order. But his efforts ended with one of his apprentices leaving his plans in ruin. After this tragedy Luke vanished, and no one knew where he had chosen to spend his self-imposed exile.

Luke Skywalker training Rey in the ways of the Force on Ahch-To

The scavenger Rey tracked Luke down on Ahch-To, and pleaded with him to return and help the Resistance. Rey also needed his help to understand her burgeoning Force powers. Luke refused, telling her it was time for the Jedi to end. When Rey resisted refused to leave, Luke reluctantly agreed to teach her enough that she would understand why he had made his decision.

Luke Skywalker performing Force projection from Ahch-To to Crait

Rey insisted that the galaxy needed the legend of Luke Skywalker, a plea that seemed to fall on deaf ears. She left Ahch-To, but Luke had opened himself to the Force – and a last lesson from his old master, Yoda. Luke projected himself through the Force to confront Kylo Ren on Crait, giving the Resistance a chance to escape the First Order. He passed into the Force, but his legend would continue to inspire the galaxy.

  • After Padmé Amidala's death, Obi-Wan Kenobi brought the infant Luke Skywalker to the Lars moisture farm on Tatooine, where Anakin's mother Shmi had lived. There, Owen and Beru Lars raised him as their stepson, telling Luke his father had been a navigator on a spice freighter.

  • Luke yearned for adventure among the stars, but was stuck on the farm as his friends left to become star pilots at the Imperial Academy. Uncle Owen always seemed to need him for one more season, and Luke knew his efforts could be the difference between the farm succeeding or failing.

  • But Luke's destiny would soon find him. When Jawa scavengers arrived, Owen bought two droids -- C-3PO and R2-D2 -- to help on the farm. Luke had no idea the droids were refugees from a desperate Rebel mission, or that they were bound up with the secret of his past.

  • While cleaning Artoo, Luke stumbled across a fragment of a recording in which a beautiful young woman pleaded for Obi-Wan Kenobi to help her. Luke didn't know anyone named Obi-Wan, but old Ben Kenobi was a hermit who lived in the Jundland Wastes.

  • Artoo escaped, but Luke caught up with him -- and was rescued from Tusken Raiders by Ben. The message turned out to be from Princess Leia Organa, a Rebel leader (and Luke's secret sister), who had placed the plans for the Death Star -- a terrible Imperial battle station -- in Artoo's memory banks. Leia begged Kenobi to bring the droid to Bail Organa on Alderaan.

  • Ben told Luke his father had been a Jedi Knight, and been murdered by Darth Vader. He also gave Luke an heirloom -- his father's lightsaber, the weapon of a Jedi Knight.

  • The Empire was searching for the droids too, and they murdered Luke's aunt and uncle. A heartbroken Luke agreed to go with Obi-Wan to Alderaan and learn the ways of the Force. The two hired the smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca to take them from Tatooine to Alderaan. Onboard, Luke took his first steps to becoming a Jedi Knight.

  • Han and Chewie's ship, the Millennium Falcon, was captured by the Death Star, which had destroyed Alderaan. As Obi-Wan tried to free the Falcon, Luke discovered Princess Leia was a prisoner aboard the station and convinced Han and Chewie to try and rescue her.

  • Luke, Han and Chewie saved Leia, but Obi-Wan was intercepted by Darth Vader, his former Padawan. After a saber duel with Vader, Obi-Wan sacrificed himself to give Luke time to get away on the Falcon.

  • At their base on Yavin 4, the Rebels analyzed the Death Star plans and launched a desperate mission, attacking the station with dozens of small starfighters. Hearing Obi-Wan's voice telling him to use the Force, Luke trusted his instincts to tell him when to fire a pair of proton torpedoes at the Death Star's lone vulnerable point.

  • The shot went home, destroying the Death Star in a spectacular fireball. The Rebellion had been saved, and Luke was now its greatest hero.

  • After the Battle of Yavin, Luke flew an X-wing, performed missions for the Alliance and worked to improve his nascent abilities with the Force. He joined the rebel operative Nakari Kelen on a dangerous mission to extract the Givin cryptographer Drusil Bephorin from Imperial custody on Denon. The mission succeeded, but cost Kelen her life.

  • Luke joined Leia, Han and Chewie for a mission to infiltrate Cymoon 1, site of an Imperial weapons facility. There, he was intercepted by Darth Vader. The Dark Lord overwhelmed Luke in a brief lightsaber duel, which Luke barely escaped. After that dark encounter, Luke returned with R2-D2 to Tatooine, hoping to better understand his relationship with the Force.

  • Later, the Rebels had set up a new base on Hoth. While patrolling Hoth's frozen wastes, Luke was attacked by a savage Wampa and hung up in the creature's cave as a future meal.

  • Luke escaped, but was lost in the icy Hoth night. With his strength ebbing, he had a vision of Obi-Wan Kenobi, who told him to go to the Dagobah system and continue his Force studies with a Jedi Master named Yoda.

  • Han Solo rescued Luke, who recovered from his injuries. But Imperial forces led by Darth Vader had discovered the Rebels' hideout, and launched a massive attack on Hoth.

  • Luke flew a snowspeeder against Imperial walkers, a delaying action meant to buy time for the Rebels to flee Hoth and disperse. Barely escaping with his life, he boarded his X-wing fighter with R2-D2. But Luke wasn't going to regroup with the Rebels -- he was headed for the mysterious planet Dagobah.

  • Luke and Artoo crash-landed on the murky jungle world, where they encountered a strange, wizened green creature. This turned out to be Yoda, who agreed to train Luke as a Jedi.

  • Yoda taught Luke much about the Force -- but he also tested his young pupil. In a vision in a dark-side cave, Luke seemed to strike down Vader -- only to have the Sith Lord's helmet crack open to reveal Luke's own face.

  • Yoda urged Luke to believe -- at one point lifting the young Jedi's X-wing free of the swamp after Luke failed to do so. But Luke cut short his training after he had a vision of Han, Chewie and Leia being tormented in a city in the clouds.

  • On Bespin's Cloud City, Luke stumbled into a trap set by him by Vader, who sought to capture the young Jedi. Luke dueled Vader, but proved no match for the Sith Lord's Force powers and experience with a lightsaber.

  • Vader slashed off Luke's hand and revealed his terrible secret: He was Luke's father. He urged Luke to join him so they could destroy the Emperor together. But an anguished Luke refused, choosing instead to let himself fall down a vast shaft in Cloud City.

  • Leia, Chewie and Lando Calrissian rescued Luke, and narrowly escaped Vader thanks to Artoo's quick repair of the Falcon. Droid surgeons created a cybernetic hand for Luke, who promised to soon join Lando and Chewie in an effort to rescue Han from the crimelord Jabba the Hutt.

  • On Tatooine, Luke, Leia, Chewie and the droids infiltrated Jabba's palace and rescued Han, fighting their way free of his goons in a wild battle in the desert. The others headed for the Rebel fleet, assembling for an assault on the as-yet-incomplete second Death Star. But Luke had a promise to keep.

  • He returned to Dagobah to resume his Jedi training, but Yoda was very sick, and soon died. The spirit of Obi-Wan told Luke that to become a Jedi he must confront Vader again, and revealed that Leia was Luke's sister. Luke stubbornly insisted there was still good in Vader, and told Obi-Wan he couldn't kill his own father.

  • Returning to the Rebels, Luke joined Han, Chewie, Leia and the droids on a mission to the Forest Moon of Endor, where they sought to destroy the Death Star's protective energy shield. They fought Imperial troops on speeder bikes, but Luke realized he was endangering the mission -- Vader could sense his presence in the Force.

  • Luke surrendered to the Empire, urging Vader to resist the Emperor's will and let go of the darkness that had claimed Anakin Skywalker, his true self. But the Dark Lord said it was too late for him, and took Luke to the Emperor. Palpatine, he told his son, was Luke's master now.

  • Aboard the second Death Star, Luke confronted Darth Sidious in his guise as Emperor Palpatine -- but learned another terrible secret. The Death Star was operational, and a legion of troops was hidden on the Forest Moon, waiting for Han and Leia's strike team.

  • The Emperor had lured the Rebels to Endor to destroy them, and he taunted Luke with this knowledge, trying to goad him into succumbing to his anger and taking up his lightsaber -- which would complete his journey to the dark side. Luke's will finally broke and he dueled Vader as Sidious cackled in satisfaction.

  • Luke defeated Vader and slashed off his hand, and a pleased Sidious told him it was time for him to take his father's place as Sidious's new Sith apprentice. But Luke refused, casting his saber away and declaring that he was a Jedi, like his father before him. Sidious accepted this, but then blasted Luke with Force lightning.

  • Near death, Luke begged Vader to help him. His pleas awakened something in Vader, who picked up Sidious and hurled him into the Death Star's reactor shaft. Luke's love had brought about the return of Anakin Skywalker, who had finally fulfilled his destiny by bringing balance to the Force.

  • Anakin died and Luke fled the second Death Star just before Lando and Wedge Antilles destroyed it. On Endor, he burned his father's armor as X-wings launched fireworks to celebrate the Empire's fall.

  • Returning to his friends, Luke saw a trio of Force spirits -- Obi-Wan, Yoda and Anakin, redeemed by his sacrifice. Luke's love for his father had saved the galaxy, and brought about a chance to restore the Republic and the Jedi Order.

  • Luke trained Leia in the ways of the Force. But his sister broke off her Jedi training after experiencing a vision that her Jedi path would end with the death of her son. She returned to the political arena, leaving her lightsaber with her brother. One day, she predicted, it would be picked up again by someone who’d finish her journey.

  • With the Sith defeated, Luke wandered the galaxy in search of lost Jedi lore he hoped might help him recreate the Jedi order. But his efforts ended in tragedy, with one of his apprentices – the future Kylo Ren -- turning on his fellow students and leaving Luke’s plans in ruin. Luke then vanished, the site of his exile unknown.

  • With the Sith defeated, Luke wandered the galaxy in search of lost Jedi lore he hoped might help him recreate the Jedi order. But his efforts ended in tragedy, as his nephew Ben Solo fell to the dark side and destroyed all Luke had tried to build. Ben became the dark side warrior Kylo Ren, while Luke vanished, the site of his exile unknown.

  • With the galaxy in turmoil, both Kylo’s First Order and Leia Organa’s Resistance desperately tried to discover Luke’s location. A fragment of an old star chart led the Jakku scavenger Rey to Maz’s castle on Takodana – and a Jedi weapon once wielded by the Skywalkers.

  • BB-8’s clue combined with data in R2-D2’s memory banks to reveal Luke’s location. Accompanied by R2-D2 and Chewbacca, Rey made the long journey to the site of Skywalker’s exile, and a fateful meeting with the long-lost Jedi master.

  • To Rey’s shock, Luke refused to return or to teach her. He told her it was time for the Jedi to end and he had come to Ahch-To to die. His life had shrunk to rounds of chores and bitter memories of how he had failed Ben Solo as a teacher.

  • But Rey refused to accept that answer, and wore Luke down. Understanding that she was strong with the Force, Luke agreed to teach her just enough for her to understand his decision. Once revealed, her raw power with the Force frightened him – he had seen such strength only once before, in Ben Solo.

  • As her powers grew, Rey understood that Luke had cut himself off from the Force – and began to question the truth of what had happened between Luke and Ben Solo years before. When Luke re-established his connection with the Force, momentous events were set in motion.

  • Disturbed by Rey’s growing connection with Kylo, Luke ordered her to leave the island. When she demanding the truth about what had happened with Kylo, Luke revealed that he had sensed the rising darkness in Ben and briefly ignited his lightsaber -- a moment of weakness that led his nephew to lash out and destroy the temple. Luke tried to stop Rey from seeking to turn Kylo back to the light side, and once again refused to leave his island. Disillusioned, Rey left Ahch-To.

  • With Rey gone, Luke was determined to finally burn the Jedi library and bring the Jedi Order to an end – but once again couldn’t bring himself to take this final step. Yoda’s spirit appeared to Luke, calling down lightning to ignite the library. Yoda told Luke he’d needed to look past some old books and help Rey. Having lost Ben Solo, he added, Luke couldn’t lose her.

  • On Crait, the surviving Resistance members were astonished to see Luke enter their hideaway in Jedi robes. Luke apologized to Leia, warning his sister that while he would face Kylo, he couldn’t save him. But when Leia said she’d accepted her son was gone, Luke assured her that no one was ever really gone.

  • Luke then walked out to face down the entire the First Order, shrugging off a fusillade of destructive fire. He apologized to Kylo for failing him, but told his nephew that his rampage would accomplish nothing: the Resistance would survive, the war was just beginning, and Luke would not be the last Jedi. To Kylo’s shock, his lightsaber passed through Luke. His uncle had projected himself across the galaxy to distract him and save the Resistance.

  • This superhuman effort left Luke drained. On Ahch-To, his body faded away as he passed into the Force, his last moment filled with peace and purpose.

  • After Rey found and lost the Emperor’s Sith wayfinder on Kef Bir, she returned to Ahch-To, setting fire to Kylo’s TIE and hurling away the Skywalker lightsaber. But it was intercepted in midair by Luke’s spirit. A Jedi’s weapon deserved more respect, he chided her wryly.

  • Luke knew what Rey had discovered – that she was Palpatine’s granddaughter. But he assured her that her spirit was stronger than blood, a lesson he’d learned as the son of Darth Vader. He urged her to confront her fear and face Palpatine, and gave her something she’d need – the lightsaber Leia had left in his care years earlier.

  • He also used the Force to lift and repair the X-wing he’d left derelict in the sea at the beginning of his own exile. With it and Vader’s Sith wayfinder, Rey could find her way to Exegol. Once there, she would face the resurrected Emperor with the lightsabers of both her mentors.

  • Helped by the spirits of all the Jedi, Rey defeated Palpatine, destroying him and his dark dream of a resurrected Sith empire. She then made a pilgrimage to Tatooine and the moisture farm where Luke had grown up. There, she buried the lightsabers wielded by Luke and Leia in the sand, watched approvingly by the spirits of the Skywalker twins.
