From the Movies

Within the central spire of the Jedi Temple was a fully stocked hangar bay for the maintenance and launching of the order's speedy Jedi starfighters. The compact space was efficiently used, with starfighters lined along the inner circumference of the darkened chamber. To launch individual fighters, a retractable landing pad slid into position from a hatch. Once in orbit, a starfighter would dock with its assigned hyperspace transport ring.

From the Expanded Universe

Though the Jedi Temple is the central headquarters of the order, the protectors of the Republic maintained a number of scattered bases of operation throughout the Republic. As the threat of the Separatists escalated during the years preceding the Clone Wars, these outlying stations saw increased use. When the Delta-7 starfighter was introduced to the Jedi arsenal, it was quickly distributed to hangar facilities on Kamparas, Eriadu and elsewhere to better defend the Republic against the growing conflicts.

Behind the Scenes

Like most Episode II environments, the Jedi landing platform set was constructed as a miniature maquette to study its shape and logistics. In the film, the platform was a partial set, enhanced by digital extensions for the DVD release. The scene that was omitted from the theatrical release of the film had an exchange of dialogue between Mace Windu and Obi-Wan Kenobi that would largely be transferred to earlier in the film in a scene inside the Jedi Temple that also added Yoda to the conversation.
