From the Movies

A sun-addled humanoid droid found in the streets of Mos Eisley, this particular mechanical has been spotted vacantly meandering through the corridors of the port city.

From the Expanded Universe

Originally a Servo-O-Droid CZ communications droid, this particular model was pressed into accounting and business duty in the service of the Jabba the Hutt. It figured into a well-crafted ploy by Jabba to catch a business rival in the act of thievery. Jabba let the fact slip that CZ-3 was flagged as carrying class-red information, and then left the droid unguarded. A visiting smuggling chief named Opun "The Black Hole" Mcgrrrr took the bait, and stole the droid.

Little did Opun realize that CZ-3 was loaded with surveillance gear and software. This resulted in the droid being easily distracted and flighty. After CZ-3 recorded and transmitted evidence of Mcgrrrr's thievery, the frazzled droid wandered away from his new master, and began absent-mindedly wandering the streets of Mos Eisley.

Stolen, liberated and re-stolen several times, the droid was eventually tracked down by the bounty hunting brothers of Takeel and Zutton. Zutton destroyed the droid and apprehended Mcgrrrr. A pair of mischievous Mos Eisley droid dealers promptly stole the droid's remains.

Behind the Scenes

Several CZ units are seen in the original trilogy. A battered unit, CZ-1, rests in the sandcrawler that captures Artoo and Threepio. For CZ-3's one shot in A New Hope, he was performed by Anthony Daniels. Another unit, CZ-4, can be found in Jabba's palace throne room in Return of the Jedi. Early John Mollo sketches indicate that some of CZ's surface details -- notably his face and chest-plate -- were originally intended for Darth Vader's armor.
