From the Movies
A Tatooine native, Ody Mandrell was a foolhardy thrill-seeker who entered the fateful Boonta Eve Classic that saw the liberation of Anakin Skywalker. During a pit stop in the heat of the race, Mandrell suffered career-shattering misfortune. One of his record-setting pit droids was sucked into his massive engine intakes, crippling his Podracer.
From the Expanded Universe
Xenonutritionists using Ody Mandrell as an example would conclude that the Er'kit species feeds off adrenaline and speed. The reckless racer has no respect for any other lifeforms -- let alone any other racer -- and pilots his massive Exelbrok craft with wild abandon and a blatant disregard for safety.
A native of Tatooine, Mandrell watched the sport all his life and couldn't wait for his chance to compete in the big leagues. Being younger and less experienced than his competitors gave Mandrell an unpredictable edge. What little remained of racer etiquette was left in the dust by Ody, who preferred passing vehicles by flying through them, rather than skirting around them.
Behind the Scenes
The revised rough draft of
The Phantom Menace script described a character named Ody Mysturall, a denizen of Tatooine. Concept sketches showed Ody as a wide-mouthed furball with long legs and arms, not unlike a Yuzzum. His design was drastically changed by the time his name became Ody Mandrell. In the finished film, the computer-generated character's Huttese chatter was voiced by Supervising Sound Editor Matthew Wood.
