Greedo![]()
![]() From the MoviesGreedo was an overzealous bounty hunter hired by Jabba the Hutt to collect on Han Solo. Greedo challenged Solo in the Mos Eisley Cantina. At blaster point, the Rodian demanded Solo pay his debt to Jabba. Solo claimed he didn't have the money with him. Greedo had lost his patience, and opened fire. His shot missed; it was the last mistake Greedo would make. Solo opened fire with his powerful blaster pistol, ripping through the cantina table and the Rodian's chest.Greedo was an alien with a tapir-like snout, bulbous eyes, pea-green skin, and a crest of spines atop his skull. He was survived by a relative named Beedo who took his place in Jabba the Hutt's court. From the Expanded UniverseGreedo's short life was marked by violence at every turn, but such is often the case with Rodians. The Rodian culture is marked by a reverence for the hunt, and once the green-skinned humanoids had cleared the jungles of all sizable predators, they turned to hunting one another. Clan wars were the norm, and Greedo's clan, the Tetsus, had fled Rodia for the safety of an unnamed jungle world.Greedo grew up in a jungle village with his mother Neela, his younger brother Pqweeduk, and his Uncle Nok. Greedo was never told of his Rodian heritage, but he felt the need to hunt in his veins. The young Greedo discovered the hidden ships in the hollow of a mountain, and learned of his people's past. Reality came rushing through the jungle in a hail of fire as vessels from the ruling Chattza clan discovered the Tetsus. Greedo and his family barely escaped in time. The Rodian refugees relocated to Level 88 of the vertical cities of Nar Shaddaa. Here, Greedo became immersed in street life, learning the ropes from his friend Anky Fremp. All around, Greedo would see bounty hunters, and the young Rodian idolized them and longed to join their ranks. Greedo had his multifaceted eye on a sweet Incom Corsair that mechanic Shug Ninx kept in his garage. Greedo longed to own the ship, and christen it the Manka Hunter, making it the vessel for his bounty hunting career. Greedo's ambition got the better of him as he tried to steal a pair of Dekk-6 power couplings for future use on his ship. Those power couplings were destined for a beat-up Corellian freighter in Ninx's garage, and the Wookiee co-owner of the ship didn't take too kindly to the theft. Chewbacca caught Greedo lurking around the Millennium Falcon and grabbed the young Rodian before he could get away. Han Solo saw that the Rodian was just a harmless kid, so he gave Greedo the Falcon's used power couplings in exchange for his jacket. Greedo, humiliated, vowed revenge. Greedo became involved with bounty hunters Spurch "Warhog" Goa and Dyyz Nataz quite by accident. He overheard a commotion among these hunters and Gorm the Dissolver which soon became an armed conflict. Goa's blaster rifle was knocked aside, landing at Greedo's feet. Greedo fire the rifle, taking Gorm out of commission. Goa gave Greedo a cut of the contested bounty, and offered to train the kid in the ways of bounty hunting. The ever-eager Greedo agreed. Greedo left his family behind on Nar Shaddaa, and left with Goa and Nataz to Tatooine. Jabba the Hutt offered the bounty of Han Solo to Goa and Nataz. While the two experienced hunters were ready to reject the assignment, Greedo took it. "I can handle him," he said in his native Rodian tongue. Greedo confronted Solo in Docking Bay 94, and later at a dockside cafe. Solo was ready with an excuse each time, explaining why he couldn't pay his debt to Jabba. Solo, who didn't view the young Rodian as a threat, calmly warned him to back off. When Greedo tried to kill him later inside a seedy cantina, Han blasted the young Rodian instead. Goa had lost a student, but he also gained the bounty on Greedo's head. He knew Solo would kill the youth, and profited from it, as some Chattza Rodians saw the fugitive Tetsu die. As a final insult, Greedo's corpse was collected by Wuher, the bartender. The alien's powerful pheremones were used to concoct a very special drink for Jabba the Hutt. Behind the ScenesGreedo was played by two people due to the shooting schedule of A New Hope. When Greedo is face-to-face with Han Solo, these shots were filmed in England with Harrison Ford as Solo and Paul Blake as Greedo. The Greedo mask is not articulated at all in these shots.Unimpressed with Greedo's inability to visibly emote, George Lucas had the make-up effects crew refit the mask with articulated features. With the improved mask, Lucas shot close ups of Greedo, this time played by Maria de Aragon. These were shot in California without Harrison Ford. In reality, Greedo spoke Quechua, a language indigenous to the Andean regions of South America. Keywords: Databank - Expanded Universe, Databank - Episode IV Filed under: Vault, Character
