From the Movies
A strict military disciplinarian, General Madine was an important Alliance officer and advisor to Mon Mothma. It was Madine who masterminded a number of crucial Alliance operations that paved the way for victory at the Battle of Endor. Madine was tasked with finding a way to destroy the shield generator protecting the second Death Star. His personally trained soldiers captured the Imperial shuttle, Tydirium. With this shuttle, Madine's troops, under the command of General Solo, infiltrated Imperial territory on the Sanctuary Moon. From the Expanded Universe
Madine, a Corellian, was formerly the leader of the Storm Commandos, an elite Imperial army unit. When their missions became increasingly objectionable, Madine abandoned a promising military career to fight for the Alliance.Madine's defection did not go smoothly. He was captured by Imperial General Rom Mohc, and incarcerated in a daunting prison complex on Orinackra. The highly skilled Alliance agent Kyle Katarn infiltrated the prison facility, and freed Madine. While laying low in a Corellian safe house, the Imperials again tried to snatch the defector, but Rogue Squadron covered Madine's escape.
With the backing of General Carlist Rieeken, Madine was accepted into Alliance ranks, and appointed a position in Mon Mothma's Advisory Council as Chief Military Advisor. His fresh perspective and Imperial insight provided the Alliance with many victories.
As commander of the Alliance Special Forces, General Madine often quoted his rules of war -- basic strategies that the Alliance used in ground campaigns. The first rule is "hit 'em where they ain't." Basically, this rule stated that the Alliance must never attempt to match Imperial forces strength for strength. The second rule is "attack the enemy's spirit." In short, the Alliance ground forces have a much higher morale than Imperial troops, and Madine encouraged Alliance commanders to take advantage of this. Rule number three is "use your brains." As most Rebel ground troopers receive their training in the field, not at the Academy, Rebels often resorted to unorthodox tactics.
As the Alliance transitioned to the New Republic, Madine kept active in the upper echelons of the military. He ascended to the rank of Supreme Allied Commander for Intelligence.
While holding this position, Madine went on a daring mission in the field during the Darksaber crisis, wherein unscrupulous Hutt agents attempted to wield power with a superweapon prototype. Madine infiltrated the Darksaber, but he was captured by Durga the Hutt's henchmen. They brought Madine before the loathsome gangster, and Durga killed the New Republic officer with a fatal shot from a blaster.
Behind the Scenes
Given the uncertainty inherent in giving key expository dialog to Admiral Ackbar -- a fishfaced puppet -- the filmmakers of Return of the Jedi shot a number of "backup" shots of Madine standing in for the Mon Calamari admiral, though these ultimately went unused. Keywords: Databank - Expanded Universe, Databank - Episode VI
