From the Movies

The outspoken Senator Fang Zar was opposed to Chancellor Palpatine's sweeping executive proclamations and decrees that riddled the Galactic Constitution with amendment after amendment. For his idealism, he was selected by Senators Mon Mothma and Bail Organa to join a cabal of concerned politicians searching for a way to stop the Chancellor.

In these dark times that saw an end to the Republic, Zar was dismayed that the Senate had come to such a dire position. He signed the Petition of 2,000, a formal declaration of complaint against Palpatine's policies, and a request to relinquish emergency powers back to the Senate and do away with a newly installed system of regional governors. He was also one of the delegates who presented the petition to Palpatine, to little effect.

From the Expanded Universe

An aged politician representing the Sern sector, Fang Zar split his time among his estates on Coruscant, Sern Prime and Ghorman. He was respected among his colleagues for his tenacity, and willingness to express his concerns without blunting his words with needless political rhetoric. This gave him a gruff exterior, which when combined with his lined features and frizzy Sern topknot and beard, made him one of the more memorable faces of the Senate. Palpatine's allies and advisors viewed him as a troublemaker that needed to be eliminated.

When the Palpatine assumed the mantle of Emperor, and declared the Jedi enemies of the state, he also targeted several members of the Delegation of 2,000. Fang Zar was arrested and detained by the newly formed Imperial Security Bureau. Following his release, he fled Coruscant and was granted temporary political asylum on Alderaan.

Behind the Scenes

The original concept art for Fang Zar included strong aboriginal facial features, prompting Casting Director Christine King to hire Warren Owens for the part.
