Nass, Boss![]()
![]() From the MoviesThe stout and stern leader of the Gungans, Boss Nass was a proud keeper of his people's ways. His booming voice issued decrees on behalf of all the Gungans of Otoh Gunga. He kept a tight rein on Gungan affairs, continuing a longstanding custom of isolationism. Ages ago, a cultural misunderstanding led to a rift between the Gungan and the Naboo colonists. This tension was perpetuated by stubbornness and ignorance on both sides.Though Nass' temper is short, he is not entirely close-minded. Displays of courage and humility can pierce through his preconceptions. When Queen Amidala prostrated herself before the Gungan leader to request his aid in fighting off the Trade Federation invasion, he was impressed. The Naboo didn't consider themselves superior to the Gungans, after all. Nass committed the Gungan Grand Army to wage war against invading battle droids. When the Trade Federation was repulsed from Naboo, Nass joined Amidala in a huge celebratory parade that united the Naboo and the Gungans in a new era of peace and cooperation. From the Expanded UniverseRugor Nass' strong will and authoritative manner saw him ascend to the position of Otoh Gunga's Boss. He had made a name for himself in his younger years, winning the Big Nasty Free-For-All, the most physically demanding event of the Gungan Festival of Warriors, three years in a row.Under his conservative rule, Otoh Gunga flourished and grew. Though Nass was an isolationist, he had grand visions for Otoh Gunga. Eager to make his mark on the city, he commissioned a huge concourse called City Bigspace that proved to be a popular addition to the underwater city. After striking an alliance with the Naboo, Nass changed his long-standing policy of seclusion, and opened Otoh Gunga to offworld visitors. To preserve the ecological balance of Lake Paonga and the surrounding wilderness, Nass spearheaded an initiative to colonize one of Naboo's moons, Ohma-D'un. This marked the first Gungan space program, and was a great step forward in joining the culture to the galactic community at large. Unlike most of the Gungans in Otoh Gunga, Nass is of the old Ankura lineage, denoted by his green skin and hooded eyes. Behind the ScenesThe revised rough draft of The Phantom Menace identifies the Gungan leader as "Governor Nass." He does not speak in his characteristic Gungan-Basic tongue in this version.Design of Boss Nass actually evolved out of the basic design of Jar Jar Binks. This resemblance was evident in the early sketches of the Gungan leader, but the conceptualization evolved considerably, and as the number of sketches grew, so did the physique of the character. The final design depicted a stout, fleshy and imposing creature with a detectable difference in lineage from other Gungans seen in Episode I.
