From the Movies

As a young, shy girl, Beru Whitesun's aspirations did not venture beyond the horizon of Tatooine. She was content to marry Owen Lars and lead the tough life of a moisture farmer. Along with her husband, Beru proudly toiled under harsh conditions, season after season, in a determined effort to extract precious units of water from the parched environment.

Beru also fulfilled the role of guardian and substitute mother to young Luke Skywalker, and repeatedly voiced her support for his dream of joining his friends at the Academy. Beru fell victim to the Empire when Imperial stormtroopers raided the family farm in search of droids thought to have top-secret plans for the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star.

From the Expanded Universe

Of the local farming families, the Whitesuns were recognized as the most well adapted to the harsh desert climes of Tatooine, having pulled moisture from the parched skies for three generations. Beru grew up near Mos Eisley, but met Owen during a trip to Anchorhead. She fit in perfectly with the Lars family.

Though life on the dusty world was desolate, Owen and Beru weren't entirely without friends. Windy's parents would visit the homestead on occasion. Beru never complained when the family finances were tight, and she asked for little. Her one request was for a droid that spoke domestic Bocce, to help her around the house.

Behind the Scenes

Beru was played by the late Shelagh Fraser in A New Hope. Anne Geraty voiced Beru in the Star Wars National Public Radio Dramatization. For Episode II, actress Bonnie Maree Piesse played Beru Whitesun. Concept Artist Dermot Power's illustrations for Beru reveal that her wardrobe was partially inspired by the clothes worn by Camie, a young friend of Luke Skywalker who was cut out of A New Hope.
