    Geonosis

A harsh rocky world less than a parsec away from Tatooine, Geonosis is a ringed planet beyond the borders of the Galactic Republic. Its uninviting surface is made up of harsh, rocky desert, and the creatures that evolved on Geonosis are well equipped to survive in the brutal environment. The most advanced lifeform are the Geonosians, sentient insectoids that inhabit towering spire-hives. The Geonosians maintain large factories for the production of droids and weapons for the Separatist cause in the Clone Wars. After the Clone Wars, the Empire chose Geonosis as the construction site of the first Death Star, restricting travel to the system and sterilizing the planet’s surface.

History

Slave I flying towards Geonosis

The Outer Rim world of Geonosis was home to an insectoid species known for skillful manufacturing. The Geonosians built the Trade Federation’s droid army and played a key role in arming the Separatists.

As the Separatist Crisis escalated, Count Dooku met the leaders of the Separatist conspiracy on Geonosis. Obi-Wan Kenobi spied on this meeting and reported back to Coruscant, but was captured – as were his would-be rescuers, Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padmé Amidala.

A rescue mission led by Jedi and clones became the first battle of the Clone Wars. With the Republic’s new army pressing its attack, Dooku retreated with plans for a secret weapon of Geonosian design – the planet-killing Death Star battle station.

Geonosis was critical to the Separatist war effort, and the Republic launched a second invasion, determined to stop Geonosian leader Poggle the Lesser’s support for Dooku’s military machine.

Under utmost secrecy, the Empire began construction of the first Death Star in space near Geonosis. Travel to the system was restricted to all but a few, and the surface of the planet was sterilized.

Following the disappearance of Saw Gerrera and his band of rebels on Geonosis, the Ghost crew was sent to investigate. They found Saw alive, but his entire team had been wiped out by a single Geonosian. Eventually, the rebels captured the alien, who they nicknamed Klik-Klak, but came to discover that he was protecting a queen egg -- the key to the survival of his race, which the Empire had all but destroyed.

Deep in the planet's underground, Klik-Klak led the rebels to giant Imperial canisters that had been filled with poison and used to eliminate the Geonosians. The rebels planned to bring these back as evidence of the Empire's atrocities, but it was not to be; the Empire, having detected the rebels' presence, tried to bury them alive, and the Ghost lost the canisters during their escape. Still, Klik-Klak -- and hope for the future of the Geonosian people -- survived, remaining on the planet.

  • In the final years of the Republic, the Outer Rim world of Geonosis emerged as a key manufacturing planet, with its hives earning a reputation for skillful design and efficient manufacturing. The Geonosians created the army of battle droids that the Trade Federation used to invade Naboo a decade before the Clone Wars.

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi followed the bounty hunter Jango Fett from Kamino to Geonosis, surviving a battle with Fett in the planet’s rings. Landing on the rocky, arid planet, Obi-Wan slipped inside one of its hive-factories, where he spied on Count Dooku, Geonosian leader Poggle the Lesser and other Separatist conspirators preparing for war with the Republic.

  • Kenobi was captured and sentenced to death – as were Anakin Skywalker and Naboo Senator Padmé Amidala, who’d mounted an ill-fated rescue attempt from nearby Tatooine. The three were bound to pillars in an execution arena, with Geonosians cheering as savage beasts were released in the arena.

  • A team of Jedi and clones rescued the captives, and a skirmish in the arena quickly spread to Geonosis’s rocky plains. During the fighting, Dooku retrieved plans for a secret Geonosian project – a battle station built around a planet-killing superlaser.

  • Republic and Separatist forces clashed on the Geonosian plans in a massive battle. The day ended as a Republic victory, but the Clone Wars had begun – and would soon engulf the galaxy.

  • During the Clone Wars, Padmé discovered that Poggle was building new droid foundries for the Separatists, an effort underwritten by loans from the InterGalactic Banking Clan.

  • The Republic did what it had to do, invading Geonosis once again before the foundries could be returned to full capacity. In the grueling battle, the Republic landed ground vehicles and troops under heavy fire and struggled to secure a beachhead.

  • Poggle’s latest weapons factory was a critical target, the source of powerful “super tanks” that could withstand hits from Republic artillery. The Padawans Ahsoka Tano and Barriss Offee destroyed the factory from within, striking a key blow in the battle for Geonosis.

  • After Poggle fled, Jedi Master Luminara Unduli tracked him to catacombs beneath the Progate Temple. There, she was captured by Karina the Great – the secret Geonosian queen. The Jedi rescued Luminara, captured Poggle and buried Karina and her Geonosian zombies in rubble.

  • Poggle was taken into Republic captivity, but would soon resume his support of the Separatist cause. The Geonosian leader perished on Mustafar at the end of the Clone Wars, struck down by Anakin Skywalker on orders from Darth Sidious.

  • Geonosis was the site chosen for construction of the Death Star by the newly established Empire. Travel to the planet was limited to supply convoys and high-ranking Imperials privy to the secret project to build the galaxy’s ultimate weapon.

  • The Empire sterilized Geonosis, killing almost all life on its surface. But one queen survived the cataclysm in a subterranean lair concealing a droid factory. After the Battle of Yavin, Darth Vader – tipped off by the rogue archaeologist Doctor Aphra – invaded the queen’s lair, stealing the advanced battle droids she had created.

    Geonosis Droid Factory

The hives of Geonosis were riddled with underground caverns, some of which had been converted to massive automated factories that turned out battle droids, weapons, vehicles and other products for Count Dooku’s Separatists. Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala found themselves trapped in a Geonosian factory when their mission to rescue Obi-Wan Kenobi went awry. The Jedi and the senator had to battle Geonosian drones and avoid the assembly line’s deadly stampers, cutters and crucibles. Quick thinking by R2-D2 saved Padmé from a fatal dip in molten alloy, but Anakin’s saber was destroyed, leaving him defenseless against Jango Fett. Meanwhile, an industrial accident caused C-3PO to lose his head.

    Poggle the Lesser

Poggle the Lesser was the leader of the insect-like Geonosians throughout the era of the Clone Wars. Due to his control of the Geonosian battle droid factories, he was a powerful figure within the Confederacy of Independent Systems and commanded the droid armies that fought against the Republic in two battles for control of Geonosis. At the end of the war, Poggle lost his life to Darth Vader.

    Count Dooku

Count Dooku was a menacing Sith Lord and central figure in the Clone Wars. Once a Jedi -- trained by Yoda -- he became disillusioned with the Jedi Order and thirsted for greater power. Dooku voluntarily left the light side behind and became Darth Sidious’ dark side disciple, taking the secret name Darth Tyranus and leading the Separatist army. Dooku advanced Sidious’s secret plot to take over the galaxy, but forgot that betrayal is the nature of the Sith.

    Confederacy of Independent Systems

The Confederacy of Independent Systems, also known as the Separatist Alliance, was a collection of star systems and corporate titans that left the Republic and fought for independence against the Republic’s clone armies and Jedi Knights. The charismatic former Jedi Count Dooku was the Alliance’s political leader, while its military power came from credits and assets donated by powerful galactic trade groups. No one suspected that the Alliance was actually a tool of Darth Sidious, who had engineered the Clone Wars as part of a Sith plot to rule the galaxy.
