Loving the Prequels

By Bonnie Burton

As an adult fan of the films, Sulkin doesn't collect toys as much as he does high-end lightsabers and Star Wars art. "If Master Replicas could make real lightsabers and speeder bikes life would be much better," Sulkin smiles. "The lightsabers they have now are one half a step from the real thing. My collection is strictly for turning off all the lights in my apartment and then turning on the lightsabers and looking at myself in the mirror."

"I'm also a collector of Star Wars art," Sulkin continues. "At Celebration IV, they had an artist's corner and I bought four prints including one of the stormtroopers attacking the Jawas' sandcrawler (by artist Kilian Plunkett). There's some very clever posters like one of stormtroopers that says 'Enlist Now' (by artist Mark Chiarello) and a propaganda-style print with Luke in Red Squadron (by artist Cat Staggs). I also got a cool print (by artist Scott Erwert) of when Luke and Leia have to swing across and they're looking down from the edge. Carrie Fisher does voices for our show sometimes and she signed it for me with the phrase 'We'll always have Alderaan.'"

Sulkin also owns one-of-a-kind art pieces from "Family Guy" animators that created their own take on the Star Wars galaxy. "It's great being here at 'Family Guy' because there's so many artists here and we have a lot of art shows," Sulkin says. "A couple times of year, there will be a theme to the show -- like the one coming up that's movie posters. Other themes have included childhood fears, and last year it was Star Wars. So these great animation artists we have had to take a letter of the alphabet and turn it into a Star Wars theme. I bought B for Burning which was an awesome painting of Luke staring at his burning hut on Tatooine with the binary sunset; and R is for Rancor and it has a Jawa peeing his pants when it sees the Rancor; and a digital print of Y is for Yoda which is a really cool shot of a binary sunset and Yoda igniting his lightsaber in the distance."

"I am surrounded in my office and my home in Star Wars stuff," Sulkin continues. "Along with the posters and art prints, I also have the original Drew Struzan Star Wars poster in a frame in my office. The executive producer here who's really quite good at origami made me a Millennium Falcon. Seth gave me as a gift a few years ago a pencil cell of Qui-Gon Jinn from the Clone Wars animated cartoon from Cartoon Network."

Being a die-hard fans of the films, it's interesting to note that Sulkin has a special appreciation for the prequels. "My all-time favorite is the original Star Wars," Sulkin says. "And even though Empire is the trendy, fashionable pick, I'm one of those guys who actually loves the prequels. I know the hardcore fans think the original trilogy is way better, but I really enjoyed them. There were parts of The Phantom Menace I could have had less of -- like Jar Jar and the kid. But The Phantom Menace had the best piece of music -- 'Duel of the Fates' -- in all six of the films. It had Darth Maul which is one of the best bad guys ever. And the technological advances that happened since Jedi to now were just jaw dropping."

Sulkin adds, "I loved Attack of the Clones -- the last half hour was just unbelievable with all the Jedi in the Arena scene. Some of my favorite moments in the saga are from the prequels like the two-headed lightsaber, and the coolest sound effect ever of the seismic charge in space. I am fascinated by sounds like the echo-like roar of the reek in the Arena. And the daylight Arena battle sequence that turned into the start of the Clone Wars was unbelievable."
