What do you get when you mix dried
bantha hoof, nerf yogurt,
Dantooine grass and
Kessel spice? According to blogger and budding chef Austen Hughes: Tauntaun Tortellini!
In his blog Running, Cooking and Star Wars, Hughes likes to share his recipes for such delicious dishes such as Tauntaun Tortellini, Boga Bread Tomato Soup, Bantha Browned-Butter Shortbread, Ackbar Apple Linguine, Sebulba Spaghetti, Sandcrawler Sweet and White Potato Spears, and Greedo's Grilled Nuna Special for fanboy foodies everywhere.
"One night while I was making a spaghetti recipe, I wondered if I could maybe make a blog entry about the recipe I was using," Hughes says. "So after some brainstorming with my family, we came up with the name 'Sebulba Spaghetti' for the first one and it stuck."
"I think that blogging is a good way to share some of my favorite recipes with other fans," Hughes adds. " I love it when they tell me that they have whipped up some Sebulba Spaghetti or Tauntaun Tortellini and come back later saying that they liked it. Also, I'm delving into actually creating some recipes of my own, and hope to have at least one soon. At some point I want to create my very own galactic cookbook that myself and anyone else can access anytime they want."
Hughes may be creating his own unique brand of fan fiction as he thinks of recipe after recipe using every creature, plant and odd item he can think of in the Star Wars galaxy for his signature dishes. "It's lot of fun to think up what the ingredients that I use would be in the Star Wars world," Hughes smiles. "When you make pasta, you don't use angel hair, you use Wookiee hair!"
While the idea of snacking on bits of a sandcrawler or inhaling a plate of Tauntaun Tortellini might make most people scratch their heads, Hughes offers the real-world ingredients side by side the Star Wars grocery list -- so no need to get lost in the dairy section searching for bantha cream.
In addition to his own arsenal of ideas for recipes in his blog, he also gleaned inspiration from a very special cookbook ideal for any beginning Star Wars chef. "I stumbled across a really cool looking cookbook one day on a trip to the book store," Hughes recalls. "The instant I saw the book title The Star Wars Cookbook: Wookiee Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes, I knew I had finally found it: Star Wars and cooking all in one! Dozens of meals later, it is sitting in my kitchen with nearly every page having some kind of reminder (whether it's spaghetti sauce or raspberry juice) of the dish I made."
By blogging his favorite recipes, Hughes finds himself paying closer attention to any scenes in the saga where characters are cooking and eating. "I love that scene in Yoda's hut when he is making that stew, because when Luke tastes it, he practically spits it back out," Hughes laughs. "I thought that was so funny that the esteemed Jedi Master didn't know how to make soup! So I am planning on releasing the recipe for the very stew Yoda makes in his hut just to discover why Luke couldn't eat it."
And while Yoda might not earn the title of Top Chef, Hughes has a hunch who might. "It would be really cool for General Grievous to be a chef," Hughes says. "I can see him now in a chef hat, stirring pasta sauce in one hand and kneading dough with one of the others!"
With all this food for thought, it all comes back down to one last question. What is in a Wookiee Cookie? Hughes answers, "Some chocolate chips, ground dewback scales, and some Wookiee hair -- did I miss anything?"
Here's one of Hughes' tasty recipes to try yourself:
Tauntaun Tortellini
1 package (9 oz.) spinach-stuffed tauntaun. (Or refrigerated spinach-cheese tortellini)
1 package (9 oz.) cheese-stuffed tauntaun (If you not in the mood for tauntaun, you could use refrigerated plain cheese tortellini)
For the Parmesan dip:
1 1/2 cups nerf yogurt. (If you want, you can use Ranch dressing)
3/4 cups grated bantha hoof (or grated Parmesan cheese)
2 tbs. chopped Dantooine grass. (If you can't find any, use chopped fresh parsley)
2 cloves garlic
Pinch of salt
1/4 tsp. Kessel spice (Use black pepper)
1. Cook the tauntaun in a large pot of lightly salted boiling water until firm but tender. Drain, and cool under cold running water.
2. Combine nerf yogurt, bantha hoof, Dantooine grass, garlic, salt, and Kessel spice in a small bowl, and refrigerate until you are ready to serve.
3. Skewer the tauntaun with toothpicks, and serve with dip. Enjoy!
